Refugees are the main concern here. The authors study recents in recent decades where conflicts have led to the creation of mass human movements and environmental degradations. Unsurprisingly, these have very negative effects on economic growth, even leaving aside the numerous fatalities.One chapter looks at the 11 September 2001 attack on New York and the aftermath. Where survivors were compensated by various means. And where there was massive environmental damage within the city. However, this pales to other conflicts mentioned here. Like the guerilla warfares in El Salvador and Guatamala during the 80s, and in Columbia recently. In those, the death tolls and numbers of displaced were far higher. And their societies much poorer, so that compensation was far less, to the extent that it even existed.An American reader should reflect on this and appreciate how lucky indeed were the American victims in 2001. They at least were in a wealthy society that was able to and did provide massive relief.
