The Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini's "The Art of War" is an early classic on military strategy and tactics. With von Clausewitz, he was one of the more widely read scholars on the subject in the 19th century. His book tends to have an abstract, scholarly air to it that suggests that he was more of an "arm chair" theorist than a man whom he learned much from--Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon may have had general perspectives on warfare, but he was also someone who was able to be improvisational on the battlefield, and Jomini cannot quite capture that in this work. Nonetheless, a classic.Charles Messenger's Introduction does single out Jomini for mention, when he notes (Page v): "Nineteenth -century military thought was dominated by two men, one a German and the other a Swiss. . . . They were von Clausewitz and Jomini." Jomini argued that (Page vii): "Strategy decodes where to act; logistics brings the troops to this point; grand tactics determines the manner of execution and the employment of the troops."As Jomini's actual work begins, he identifies the six key components of the art of war (Page 2):"1. Statesmanship in its relation to war.2. Strategy, or the art of properly directing masses upon the theater of war, either for defense or for invasion.3. Grant tactics.4. Logistics, or the art of moving armies.5. Engineering--the attack and defense of fortifications.6. Minor tactics."The book itself, then, considers these elements of the art of war. No need to go into great detail. But some general points are in order. At one point, he emphasizes the importance of "lines"--interior lines, where one side has a more compact line and can move troops from one point to another with greater facility than the enemy; exterior lines, which are longer. If a smaller force, interior lines are critical; if a larger force, exterior lines may prove no impediment to success. One facet of this book is his diagrams depicting various orders of attack (pages 188 and following). This tends, as noted earlier, to be pretty abstract. One hesitates to think that officers in the heat of combat will intellectually assess the various orders of attack and rationally choose one over another. Among these are straight linear orders (where the two forces approach one another in straight lines) to "en echelon" attacks, where the lines are arrayed in depth. He notes in his conclusion that (Page 321) "War in its ensemble in not a science, but an art."So, if one might be interested in an analysis of military strategy and tactics from the early part of the 19th century, this is not a bad starting point. It is a classic on the subject, and, even if too abstract and academic, can be a useful book to understand the military in that era.

I want to tell future readers of this book in this way. I read it first when I was 14 or 15. I thought it was a book on how to smartly fight a war. Then I re-read it when I was 28 and it occurred to me that it may be an instruction book on how to navigate an honorable life. Years passed and I recently found it at the bottom of a box in my closet. I read it again at age 56. I realized it has more to offer. If you read this book, you will actively have to replace Sun Tzus' ancient terms and placement of hierarchy and apply them to modern situations and people. Family, bosses, neighbors, employees and the list goes on. It is my belief that this "manual" can help solve minor and major disruptions in life if used correctly. It is a book meant for good.

This is a ~15 page "summary" of the book. Ordered this thinking it was the full text because it doesn't say otherwise in the description.

It’s clear that Mr. Gagliardi is extremely passionate about all things Sun Tzu. Through various repackaged books sold both here at Amazon and through the “Science of Strategy Institute” he set up to sell you Sun Tzu themed board games and videos, he has certainly created a virtual cottage industry of Sunzi-phernalia. In addition, he also offers personalized training packages for up to $1,500 to amp up your ability to unleash the power of Sun Tzu’s system of total and complete victory in all competitive endeavors you face, whether in the boardroom or the bedroom. But all of this aside, how successful is Mr. Gagliardi at his most basic task: competently translating Sun Tzu’s original text, The Art of War? The answer: not very. This book is a complete mess, with unforgivable errors in both translation and general knowledge concerning China and the Warring States era present in almost every verse. In lieu of a laundry list I will give you just a one line example where Mr. Gagliardi clearly shows that he is out of his depth in terms of translation competence. I maintain a database of 30 translations of The Art of War in English that I use to compare and contrast various efforts, and included the screenshot of the relevant verse so you can compare it to how others have approached the text.In Chapter 11, Sun Tzu is concerned that his own soldiers might either break and run or else refuse to support the other flanks of his own army while in battle. To show how this can be remedied, Sun Tzu brings up the example of how a certain snake can provide a valuable lesson for his soldiers. As Gagliardi translates it, the line reads: “Act like an ordinary mountain snake.”From a novice’s perspective, this could be a defensible translation choice. The original Chinese characters for this line are: CHANG SHAN ZHI SHEIf you looked up each character individually via the internet you could definitely make a case that the line could read: ordinary mountain (of) snakeThe problem is that professional translation doesn’t work this way (a one-for-one translation of characters), and you have to understand all of the nuances applicable to how these thoughts are put together, especially when you are talking about a millennia old text written in a language vastly different than its modern equivalent. What a competent Sinologist would easily understand, but Gagliardi obviously didn’t, is that the character CHANG isn’t functioning as an adjective modifying the noun “snake,” but instead is the proper noun indicating the name of the mountain on which the snake resides. So the line should read: “Act like the snake of Mt. Chang”So while Gagliardi is perfectly content in his own ignorance that Sun Tzu is talking about an ordinary snake, what the text is really saying is that he needs his soldiers to be like an EXTRAordinary snake which possesses the magical ability to continue providing support to its endangered other half even after being cleaved into two separate parts. Now if you are looking to really get beyond the basics of the translation (say like someone who is willing to shell out $1,500 for advanced personal lessons) and might be curious where this Mt. Chang is located and why it was relevant to Sun Tzu, you might be surprised. Sun Tzu never actually mentioned Mt. Chang, but instead was referring to a Mt. Heng, where this extraordinary snake supposedly lived (by the way, Sun Tzu gave the snake a name, the Shuairan, a fact that was completely missed by Gagliardi). It turns out that the oldest extant copy of the Art of War was transcribed during the Han Dynasty period. What professional Sinologists know but Mr. Gagliardi might not, is that in classical Chinese there was a prohibition on using characters that were the same as the personal name of the sitting emperor. At around the same time as we believe the earliest version of The Art of War was transcribed, Emperor Wen of Han was sitting on the throne and had a personal name of “Liu Heng” which means that “Heng” would need to be omitted from all texts. “Heng” actually means “Perseverance” and it turns out that “Chang” also carries the meaning of “Perseverance” so Mt. Heng was changed to Mt. Chang to get around this prohibition—an interesting tidbit for your next trivia night.Of course the name change does nothing to impact your understanding of the Art of War, but does illustrate the difference between buying a copy of the The Art of War from a professional Sinologist who understands both the translation issues and can provide relevant historical and philosophical background, and the rank amateur who does this for a hobby and wants to pass off an inferior product hoping you won't know the difference. There are too many professionally done Sun Tzu translations available by qualified individuals (Ames, Griffith, Sawyer, Ivanhoe, Mair, Minford) to justify paying the same amount of money for Mr. Gagliardi’s lackluster effort. You wouldn’t select a surgeon for your triple-bypass surgery simply because he was “passionate” about cutting people open and learned some things on the internet. You would want to select someone who has years of relevant professional experience under their belt, and just as important, board certified. Fortunately, the stakes aren't quite so high when choosing the best Sun Tzu translation, but the same principle should apply. Don't be an ordinary purchaser of this classic text, be an extraordinary one.

Just received the book. No where in the description does it say it is a shortened version of the book. I feel like I was ripped off

NOT THE FULL TEXT....these are the cliff notes......product page sucks.

The author adds his own knowledge along with Sun Tzu's. And the author's additions are excellent. You might find Sun Tsu on the net in PDF or something, but I wanted a book form and the author was a pleasant surprise for his own good knowledge on these matters. Its a fairly short book, but that it compares so much with modern warfare and intelligence wars that you should get to know it.

It’s a teeny tiny book. U can read it in no time. Talks about 8 chapters or something close to that. Lots of additional details from the author regarding the translation and the life of señor Sun. It’s s lot of what today might be considered normal or basic military tactics and principles. Standard reading in some military circles.

Complete computation of data on the worlds animal venoms and poisons. An important textbook for the study of toxicology.I wish the pictures were colored.... It would add to the experience....But nevertheless, I highly recommend this book, for gaining in depth knowledge off the subject. This is a book for the professional, including an impressive list of reference.

excellent

If you read the description you can easily see that this isn't a kids book! I'm a herpetologist and I find this tome both extremely informative and easy to use. There are descriptions of venom chemistry, delivery system, animal habits, the records of how many people were injured and why, and effects on the envenomed in a concise one-book-covers-all way. This isn't for the kiddies nor is it for the average level of interest. The layman may need help with terms and physiological processes.

This book is excellent. It has everything you need to know! I have been looking for a certain snake that is hard to find and I read many other books, but nothing. Then I saw this book! It was in there, I couldn't belive it. Thanks Amazon!

Now in their senior year, tensions are rising and their friendship is tested. Luke is a three-time state champion wrestler, known for his hot temper and sticking up for Toby in any situation. Toby defuses tension with his quick wit and humor, while at home his criminal father has begun to take an interest in utilizing his underage son. Both boys have family issues, with abusive fathers and absent mothers, so they rely solely on each other. Alternating between a third-person account of the boys' senior year and Luke's letters to Toby from death row, this fast-paced read will have teens tearing through chapters to find out why Luke is in jail. Once readers have put the pieces together, the conclusion will leave them devastated. This is touching book about male friendship for fans of Jason Reynolds and Matt de la Peña. Review

“A smart, rugged, all-too-true story of friendship under fire. Believable characters and page-turning tension.  Bryan Bliss is going to be around for a while.” (—Chris Crutcher, author of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes)“We’ll Fly Away asks readers to consider the women and men on death row, not as scary photographs or philosophical arguments, but as actual human beings. People who are flawed, but still have hopes and dreams. People who are capable of transformation and growth. People who are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. Bryan Bliss has written an empathetic and stirring novel about what it means to fight for the outcasts, the forgotten, and even the hated, reminding us that we all have worth. That we are all valuable.” (Sister Helen Prejean)“A poignant story of loyalty, abuse, and poverty...Readers will easily empathize with quiet, tightly controlled Luke...and goofy, self-effacing Toby. This compassionate and beautifully rendered novel packs an emotional punch.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Bliss weaves together a compelling and raw story...A powerful story of loyalty, betrayal, and crippling family dysfunction.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Complex...Bliss excels at this kind of storytelling, the sort that zeros in on a character and offers a full, vibrant picture of his or her circumstances and choices. ...[Bliss] instills so much raw humanity in his characters that it’s nearly impossible not to empathize.” (ALA Booklist (starred review))“This fast-paced read will have teens tearing through chapters to find out why Luke is in jail. ... The conclusion will leave them devastated. This is [a] touching book about male friendship for fans of Jason Reynolds.” (School Library Journal)“Bliss creates a layered, well-developed character who makes bad choices but remains redeemable. . . . The unshakable and unconditional bond between the young men is tested and proves true, a ray of light in the darkness of their stories..This book will stick with [readers] for a long time.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“In this truly tragic story there is profundity at every turn, and readers up for heartbreak will come away understanding more about loyalty, empathy, and redemption.” (The Horn Book)

Possible triggers in book: child abuseSo I just finished this book and. Woah. If we ever needed books to teach us empathy, we needed this book. Bliss keeps you enthralled until the very last pages. He finnesses your engagement with the main characters, and is especially skilled at his portrayal of how adults feel when you're a teenager. You're gonna fall hard for this book.

Quite simply the best young adult book I've read since Everything, Everything in 2016. We'll Fly Away is a touching piece on friendship and loyalty and protecting the ones you love. The end result seemed almost inevitable but the journey to get there is raw and powerful. This one will stick with you.

This book completely eviscerated me. No words.

This is the best young adult fiction I have read in years!!

We'll Fly Away is a story that will leave you feeling a lot of feelings—and not necessarily good feelings. This book is bleak and it is sad, but it is a wonderful read.Luke and Toby grew up together in a small North Carolina town and belong to families that could only be considered trashy—poor, abusive, inattentive, selfish, etc. Luke's mother has him and his younger siblings living in a one bedroom apartment much too small for them. She barely works and would rather bring home strange men and try to leech off of them for money. The father is not in the picture. Toby has the opposite. He lives with just his father, alone in a small house. His father is an alcoholic and extremely abusive to him. All their life, Luke has watched over Toby, patching up his cuts and bruises, letting him sleep on the floor at his apartment as much as possible to avoid his father's rage.We know from the very beginning of the book that Luke is in prison on death row. Part of the storytelling is done via letters to Toby from Luke. So, the book is gloomy from the get-go. We know something goes down and Luke ends up in prison. There can be no happy ending to this story.Toby and Luke meander through high school and family life by leaning on each other. Luke is a wrestler, and a very good one. The boys are putting their future on Luke securing a wrestling scholarship and getting them both out of their crappy lives. When the two need an escape, they head into the woods nearby to a hollowed out plane. They spend time there and bond, as friends do. They dream of a future where they are free of their hardships; they talk about how amazing it'll be when they can escape together."We are not living in a world that stands still."Things begin to fall apart when both of them meet girls. Luke meets a girl via her being his new neighbor, and Toby meets an older woman at a bar his father frequents. These two relationships cause rifts between the best friends. Toby even falls into some of the illegal business his father is involved with.I loved this book for everything but the “romance” bits. It kind of held the plot back and made the middle of the book laggy and skim-worthy. The story lost its way around the middle, but thankfully picked back up not too long after. The characters are extremely relatable. I wanted to wrap both boys up in my arms and protect them from the harshness of their lives. I think Bryan Bliss captured the chaos of life so perfectly in this book. Sometimes, in life, you're dealt a sh**ty hand, and that is what is portrayed here. Neither of the main characters could've escaped their situations easily. They are just kids, you know? It was up to their parents to care for them, and they failed miserably. The best thing about this book for me is that it doesn't have a happy ending. It is sad and may induce tears. It is gut-wrenching and horrible. I hated it and loved it at the same time. I hated it for how real and true it could be, but loved it because this is a book that doesn't apologize. The story is earnest and raw. I believe this book is a symbol for standing against capital punishment. I, personally, think it is a great example of a situation where the death penalty is not right. That's the only thing I will really say on that, as it is a personal opinion.Overall, this book touched me to the core. It left me lost and in tears. I loved and hated it. It was very well written. The characters are built perfectly and seem so real when you read it. I enjoyed the interspersed letters from Luke to Toby via death row. It was an interesting perspective to place into a young adult story. It fit well into the narrative. This story is beautiful in it's anguish. I recommend it to everyone, but keep in mind that it is a grim story with no happy ending to be had. Beautifully done. After this, I plan to read Bryan's other two books ASAP.

We’ll Fly Away is a well-written, hard-hitting YA novel with important messages about poverty, child abuse, the justice system, and friendship. I knew We’ll Fly Away would be heartbreaking. I also expected it to be raw, upfront, exposed, and almost crude. It certainly is an unflinching book, with threads of hope (but mainly heartbreak) and a positive message.Luke and Toby are best friends - the only ones to see inside the truths of the other’s life, the only ones who could understand. But Luke struggles to maintain his wrestling record for a college scholarship with his mother’s ever increased neglect and caring for his two younger brothers, and Toby falls into a relationship with an older woman while continuing to face his father’s abuse. Events will come to a head as the boys fight for their friendship, their future, and their freedom. We’ll Fly Away is written both through third-person narration focusing on the two main characters, Luke and Toby, and letters written by Luke to Toby from death row. This before and after style is tantalising, as it is impossible not to wonder what happened to lead Luke to this current place. We’ll Fly Away does everything it sets out to do. However, it is not the sort of book I could say I enjoyed. It is important and it’s message, while clear and made clearer from the author’s note, is not preachy nor overbearing. Instead, We’ll Fly Away is the perfect conversation starter, ideal for sparking debate, and something I would love to unpack with teen readers.Toby and Luke, for all their flaws and unrepentant teenage-boy-ness, are likeable characters. In fact, it’s hard not to want to sweep them away from their life of abuse and neglect. But this is their story - hard though it might be.There are many important topics touched upon in We’ll Fly Away. Most notable, perhaps, are child abuse, poverty, and the justice system incorporating the death sentence. While We’ll Fly Away doesn’t promise a happy ending, there is a thread of hope that runs through the story. Perhaps it is the boys’ resilience, perhaps the quiet times of them dreaming of another future, perhaps in enjoying the small moments. In any case, it’s the type of hope that is more likely to have you crying than smiling, but it is hope nonetheless. We’ll Fly Away is a powerful novel. The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

This is a good fan-focused and well illustrated 'bible' of Michael Jackson's work. It's not scholarly and has some minor errors of fact, but is still much better than most commercial products out there. While not up to par with Joseph Vogel's books on MJ, it's one that most of us fans would love to have on our bookshelves. It's certainly on mine!

This is a must-buy for anyone interested in Michael Jackson. An absolutely gorgeous, full-color, image-heavy, super high-quality, huge (!) book, worthy of coffee table display, and full of tons of great information covering MJ's entire life. Buy it!!

“The Weight of Ink” by Rachel Kadish lives up to its title in many ways. At 560 tightly-written pages of magnificent prose, this novel can under no circumstances be called “light reading”. Indeed, the only reason I was able to complete it despite the protest of my arthritic hands and aging eyes was because it is unquestionably absolutely enthralling to a person with my specific interests. Those interests include theology and the incredible injustices which dogma-driven society has perpetrated against women, homosexuals, Jews, and others. This book touches on all these aspects, and many more. As the plot summary indicates, Helen Watt, an aging British historian and expert in Jewish studies, is invited by a former student to assist in the evaluation of some manuscripts found during the renovation of a house in a London suburb. Helen, suffering from Parkinson Disease, needs help in studying what she realizes is a treasure-trove of documents, and calls upon a colleague to recommend a post-graduate student to assist. Enter Aaron Levy, a young American secular Jew who has run into a roadblock on his own research attempting to find a “Jewish Connection” in the writings Shakespeare. Helen and Aaron find their collaboration both uneasy and deeply rewarding.Further dramatic tension is provided by the fact that Helen’s ploy of having the college (from which she is about to retire) acquire the documents for conservation and archiving immediately raises the specter of academic competitiveness. It soon becomes obvious that the papers include the writing of Ester Velasquez, the ward of the blind Rabbi Moseh HaCoen Mendes, a Portuguese Jew. Having fled Portugal for the relative safety of Amsterdam after the Inquisition killed his parents and blinded him, Rabbi Mendes has been sent to London to try to assist the struggling Jewish community there. The existence of a female scribe writing in 17th Century London just before plague and then fire decimated the city is remarkable enough. However, as Helen and Aaron continue to delve into Ester’s writings an incredible back-story emerges. This woman was not only a scribe, but a philosopher as well, determined to connect with some of the great – and, in the opinion of most other people of that era heretical – thinkers of her time. As the story weaves back and forth between Ester’s traumas and those of Helen and Aaron as they seek to discover the reality of who this woman was and what she really represented (before being “scooped” by other investigators), great depth and richness of thought evolves. As mentioned in my opening comments, this is not a book I could recommend to someone seeking light or trivial reading. However, it is profound, fascinating and deeply engaging for anyone who is concerned with the fundamental issues Rachel Kadish so brilliantly addresses through the words and thoughts of her extraordinary characters.

There are long passages in this book, letters written by Ester to the philosophers of her day, in contemplation of the likely impossibility of the existence of God. At one point, Aaron Levy, the present-day scholar, wonders if he is even able to understand her missives. And this is my problem with this good book. The writing was beautiful, but dense and often cryptic; I sometimes had trouble understanding it, and many of the letters and scenes went on for too long. And yet I highlighted 27 excerpts, whether for the beauty of the writing or its resonance. On the very first page, describing Helen Watt: "Hope against reason: an opiate she'd long abandoned." What great characterization. As was the subtle yet plainspoken paragraph alerting us that Watt is very ill. The writing was so beautiful at times, I read it aloud to my husband, savoring the work of a true craftsman. The story progresses along three lines: that of Ester Velasquez, who lives in London, c. 1660; and of the modern-day scholars Watt and Levy. One theme of the book could be "how will you use your life? Will you live it fully or squander it?"-- in self-containment (Watt); the cowardice of the late-maturer (Levy); or by accepting cultural repression of women (Velasquez). As Levy learns about Velasquez having to hide her intellect, and the degree to which she suffers isolation because of her mind, his understanding grows in regard to the woman he loves, and women in general. This is a coming-of-age story. Levy is twenty five, beautiful, gifted with women, and stuck. He's unhappy and unsure of himself.Watt, gravely ill but persevering at the unlocking of the mystery of Ester, also examines her own life, with a lengthy flashback to when she was a young woman in love. Her fear of that love shaped her entire life, and it's only at the end and through her work with Levy that she achieves clarity in this regard. So, good character arcs, incredibly rich historical details, lots of good in this book, but overall, too long, opaque, and subtle for me. My apologies to the author, who must be a gifted scholar herself to have completed this work.

An amazing story, told through three individuals, in three times, but so connected. While parts are difficult to understand, those that were supposed to be written in the seventeenth century, the meanings still come through, or at least the wonderful minds of those times. I would reccomend this to anyone interested in those times in England, and of Portugal, and their Jews, but also in the coming of age of two individuals, one a young man and the other, an aging women professor, neari ng retirement

The story begins when a young couple inherit a 17th century manor in Richmond, a suburb of London. During renovations, a treasure trove of 17th century documents are discovered written in Portuguese, Hebrew, Castilian. and Latin. A crusty, very British female professor and a cocky Jewish American pre-doctoral student are asked to authenticate and translate the documents. In chapters that alternate between the 21st and the 17th centuries, the reader shares in both the life of painstaking historical research and document conservation and the hardships of the diaspora Jewish community returning to England at the behest of Cromwell. We dwell in the home of a learned, saintly rabbi, blinded during the Inquisition who is summoned to London to re-build the once exiled Jewish community. Who is his scribe and what is the importance of these documents to the past, the present and the future? How does an historian distinguish between fact and his/her own interpretations of people and events? This novel is a very dense read, packed with historical information., but the twists and turns in the narrative will dispel any pre-conceived notions the reader might form. Be warned that this is a difficult book to put down and certainly whets the appetite of the reader to explore more about the 17th century .
