I talk about how The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise is the funniest book you will ever read about losing a child, which of course, sounds crazy. Well this book is the funniest book you will ever read about surviving breast and prostate (her father) cancer. In both cases I think it's because nobody can make you both laugh and cry like a good humor writer. You know you shouldn't be laughing, but you can't help it, because the writing is just so good, so insightful, and of course, so funny. But a big part of that is that while beast cancer is the overarching theme of this book, it's really about Kelly Corrigan's family, and what a family they are. Still, it's the wit and wisdom of Corrigan that makes this book so good. It reminds me a little bit of another book that I loved, called Funny in Farsi. Both writers lure you in with what seems like a mundane tale about their wild and crazy families, only to deliver a laugh out loud punch line at the end. A huge thumbs up.

I enjoyed every single page of this beautiful story! My sister had recommended a different book by this author. But I always feel the need to start with their first book. Even though this isn't a series, it's just what I do. I had no idea it was her story of cancer. If I would have known, I surely would have skipped it. My last 3 books read(not all on purpose): "When Breath Becomes Air" 5stars "The Bright Hour" 4stars, And, "The Best of Us" 5stars. All 4 are people dealing with cancer. I have enjoyed them all. The Middle Place is funny, sad, and so honest. KELLY CORRIGAN TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, in a way that made me feel like I was with her the entire time. I felt like I could walk up to her family, as if they would know me. I like her style of writing, and absolutely loved this book, and Greenie too! I am onto her next book "Lift"

I hate to say someone’s life story isn’t interesting but I know so many people with breast cancer so maybe this book seemed too run of the mill. It was a quick read though and I hope the author and her Dad are well

I enjoyed reading this story but the epilogue was so poignant and real. A tribute to a generation of hard-working mothers with good parenting skills.

Loved this special book where Kelly showed her warts with no hesitation. I snort laughed while reading. She was full on with her joy, her fears, her life.

A good story teller - as a breast cancer survivor I cried and laughed. She tells it like it really is

I loved this story of life and strength, family and love. The Middle Place helped me to appreciate even more deeply the spirit of a young woman - Kelly Corrigan - who, like my beloved daughter, had to surrender to her baldness and her new identity post diagnosis. This kind of "put your feet down on the floor every morning" living takes enormous courage and humor. It all comes through in this memoir. It also takes sheer guts to write about a journey that is both scary and unpredictable while making oneself vulnerable in the process. It's also the truth that sets the spirit free.Kelly Corrigan loves her enthusiastic and attentive father. I loved mine for similar reasons. Daughters who are this cherished by their dads survive things. Kelly also had to beat her cancer while her own father battled his. Watching it outside; experiencing it inside, all this while raising her precious children. Speaking of which, every mother will adore reading about the tender moments of mom and child, those quiet, gorgeous times that we sigh, "I love being a mom"! I think of Kelly's mom and siblings here with seeing two people they loved going through treatments at the same time. What faith this family must have.I enjoyed meeting Kelly's husband on the page. A spouse who is our port in the storm - when the waves are rocking and rolling the boat - is a blessing from heaven above. There is a refreshing authenticity in The Middle Place because Kelly Corrigan rips the face right off pretension with her humor and story-telling ability so I say high five on this book. I say bravo to this young and very gifted writer.Mary Jane Hurley BrantPsychotherapistBryn Mawr, PA

#344,442 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I've written a book which will be released on Amazon in the next 60 days. To prepare for that release, I've read 17 eBooks (so far) about marketing your eBook, promoting your eBook, pricing your eBook, how to use KDP, etc. etc. etc. Many, if not most of these "books" seem like they're being written by a high school kid that needs to write an essay that's 1,000 words long. There is lots of filler, lots of obvious ideas presented as insider tips, a lot of smarmy asides, and you can read some of these "books" in less than an hour. I would call them glorified brochures. This book has been by far the most helpful and has provided the most actionable ideas and advice. I won't prattle on about this book, other than to say that if you are only going to read one book about publishing on Amazon, this is the one that I would recommend.

I have been going crazy wondering how I can market and get my new book out there into the hands of those who want or need it... and this book gave me the way! This book is extremely valuable to anyone who wants to publish a book on Amazon. I needed a mentor who has been down this road and prayed for one yesterday.... and yesterday I started reading this book. Michael Rogan is it! I'm forever grateful for getting this book. He has provided a wealth of information! I am almost finished with this book and felt compelled to stop what I was reading just to give this review... that's how great the information is in this book. I can't wait to start implementing the tools! The information given is very organized, specific and to the point. A lot of books or blogs will give vague information and say something like "get a twitter account and use it"... but he gave the specifics on how to use it with a ton of great examples, templates, and resources with links. This author is authentic! The real deal. I now feel that I have some direction. The book itself is how a "How To" Non-fiction book should be written. Thanks Michael for not holding back information and your willingness to share this information with the rest of the world! You have given me hope! Peace, Love, Blessings :)

This book was my second Michael Rogan purchase, and it was as helpful as the first, "How to Write a Book that Doesn't Suck." The simple, straightforward advice was motivational and easy to digest, and it helped me reach a goal of writing a book start to finish in one summer. I'll let you know how it works out, but the no nonsense tips and suggestions, coupled with a little bit of humor and no pretense, make this a book I'll keep going back to again and again as a template. My only disappointment is that I can't get to the website, and the social media site doesn't seem active. If it was, I'd send a note to thank the author for helping light a fire and giving me the tools to make a dream come true.

I love the consistent structure, and the way he outlines everything step-by-step. I originally listened to this book on Audible and purchased the Kindle version. However, there is so much information in the book I decided to purchase the paper back so I could highlight and make notes. This book is like a Bible to Kindle publishing!

This book was a HUGE help to me in the launch of my debut novel. I don't know how I could have done it as successfully without the easy, step-by-step guidelines set out in this Kindle publishing guide. I surpassed my goal for the number of free downloads by over one thousand and was on several Best Seller lists in several countries. My advice to others: read this book, follow the guidelines, enjoy your success.

I loved it!This is by far the best guide, in to something I ever read! I'm digitally challenged and even I could follow the honest and concise instructions in this book. I justwish microdoft had such a great book to guide me through Windows 10 And Amazon one for Kindle. Thank you Michael Rogan

I've become a Michael Rogan groupie over the past several months and in a flash became the owner of several Kindle and Audible sets of his books. This allowed me to listen several times before executing the step by step process. Mr. Rogan provides straight to the point information in pithy but digestible chunks. As someone who is ready for the HOW TO phase of publishing it's VERY refreshing. This book offers the right balance of anecdote and information for someone who does not have the time to read reams but needs to be well versed in the subject to make the proper decisions. He provides several links for free and low cost resources as well.

Good quick information, sadly written in a bit of a "Gee-Whiz!" style, with pretty laboured-jokes. Well, that's not really fair, because although I have bought the ebook for reference, I have actually listened to it on audible's audiobook; and the narrator's grating voice and style probably makes the jokes worse than they are in print. I have listened to it, and its sister book, about five times each; such is the clarity and cleverness of the imparted wisdom. Rogan knows his stuff, knows what is important, and gives you what you pay for. Actually he gives you more than what you pay for. Good value for money and concise information without padding. To give it five stars I'd cut back on 50% of the jokes, so the good ones would stand out. And I'd get another narrator for the audiobook ...

This book is a worthy sequel to The Phoenix Project, a kind of novel that illustrated the principles of DevOps in a similar fashion that Goldratt's The Goal explained a generation ago the principles behind lean manufacturing and the theory of constraints. It used a fictional story to help the reader understand the "why" of DevOps and what a successful end state looks like. In The DevOps Handbook the same set of authors continue where they left off, this time explaining the "how" of DevOps, how the three Ways (flow, feedback, continuous learning) are implemented in practice. This book lets you see through the current hype around DevOps, much of it coming from tool vendors positioning their various "solutions" as silver bullet, putting the technology in its rightful place beside people and process. While in the Flow section there is plenty on continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) that for most people is what first comes to mind when they think of DevOps, since so much has been written about this elsewhere I don't think this is the most useful part of the book. To me the most valuable section, because it's not covered so well elsewhere, is the one on the principles of feedback, how information flows back from production environments to development via telemetry and A/B testing. But perhaps what is most useful and by itself makes this book more than worth its price are the various case studies from the companies with the most mature DevOps practices, what problems they were struggling with at first and how they got to where they are now. The book ends on a great note with the appendix, which elaborates on the lean principles on which the theoretical framework behind DevOps is built, a how to guide on "blameless postmortems", and an extensive list of references, most of them with URLs, so that the reader can drill down on all the subjects covered.

Agility and continuous improvement : how to become a truly technology driven company. This is not a step-by-step handbook on creating a DevOps culture (Continuous integration, continuous deployment and a test driven environment) but an insightful guide as to how modern IT operations are run and operate. The reason why Amazon is so hard to beat is because they update and deploy new code every single second (and further accelerate this pace) - some e-commerce businesses I work with barely manage an update every week, despite their much smaller size. Their managers never heard of DevOps - if they would have read this book they will understand why their survival depends on them adapting DevOps culture and methodology.

You can't be into DevOps and not read this book. Covers culture, practices, value stream mapping, metrics, case studies, GRC, and security just to name those that come to mind now. My Kindle edition bookmarks and notes could make for a separate book on its own because there's that much in the book worth noting.

Great culmination of various works into one read. Highly recommend. This book provides a strong conceptual overview with a large degree of DevSecOps coverage, as well as numerous case studies, but don't expect specifics or how-to details. Honestly, that would require this book to be a volume series. Technical and non-technical audiences can derive value from the book, although the book doesn't shy away from some technical aspects. Consider this a capstone book with various other books to provide the details. If your new to DevOps, or want to get a vision for it's potential, as well as strong indicators for how to implementing it (without the implementation minutia), this is one of the best books I've found to date.

Not so much as a handbook as more hype about DevOps. I mean DevOps is great and all that, but this book is not going to be much help implementing it.

Having worked in teams where DevOps is practiced and those where it is not, I can tell you from experience: This is the way to manage a software enterprise."The DevOps Handbook" offers a comprehensive picture of DevOps practice, giving just enough detail on each topic to know where to begin and what it looks like when you're doing it right. Examples are multitude, and the style is clear.I highly recommend this book for any one looking to improve their teams' ability to coherently problem solve.

While The Phoenix Project is a fictional based story about DevOps and how to institute DevOps practices, the story takes place over 90 days. In many (larger) places, the ability to implement all that's in The Phoenix Project at that timescale is not realistic. But it still has value in showing you how an organization can use the principles to achieve what the fictional organization in The Phoenix Project ultimately achieved. This book then gets into the nitty-gritty details about the practices used in The Phoenix Project and how they're beneficial for transforming your organization. It's a great addition to The Phoenix Project.

I am 90% sure they were looking at me through the door hole keyhole when writing this... Reading this publication is like opening the valve of your brain towards a whole new approach.Warning: You will be starving for a lot of other great books while reading this. Being "the goal" by Eli Goldartt the most prominent.

Review

"I loved this book and did not want it to end. I was unfamiliar with the story of the famous preacher Charles Spurgeon and the slave Thomas Johnson, and how our sovereign Lord brought them together in what can only be called a divine friendship.  Now I am. I was greatly moved by this work and more than once brought to tears. Humans can be very evil, but our God is very good. This book is a wonderful witness to both of those truths."  Daniel L. Akin, President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC   "I’ve long been a great fan of Charles Spurgeon. I wasn’t familiar with Thomas Johnson, and enjoyed reading about his part in the drama. As a fiction writer I appreciated the creative storytelling elements of this account. Matt Carter and Aaron Ivey have done a great job selecting historical realities and weaving them together into a compelling story. I really enjoyed Steal Away Home."  Randy Alcorn, author of Deception, Safely Home and We Shall See God: Charles Spurgeon’s Devotional Thoughts on Heaven   "We live in a time and a culture when many people feel their stories are worth telling. It is certainly not for me to judge the worthiness of every story out there, even the one you hold in your hands. However, I will offer this—I cannot imagine having not been given the opportunity to know this story.    Charles Spurgeon is, of course, a giant of both Christian history and lore. But where his story intersects that of the faithful, enduring man, Thomas Johnson, it creates for us an almost cinematic tale.    Matt and Aaron have worked tirelessly to accurately and fairly capture the history in which this story is set. The evil of slavery and of those who perpetuated it. The indomitable spirit of the African-American people, acutely seen through the life of Johnson. The sacredness of true friendship, and the beauty of the gospel are all at the fore, and I cannot more strongly encourage you to read this powerful work."  Pastor Léonce B. Crump Jr., Senior Pastor of Renovation Church and author of Renovate: Changing Who You Are By Loving Where You Are   "Gripping and creatively presented, Steal Away Home explores the unexpected friendship between Charles Spurgeon and the Virginia slave-turned-missionary Thomas Johnson. It is a remarkable story of courage and redemption—one that captures the spirit of both brave men."  Dr. Christian T. George, Curator of the Spurgeon Library, assistant professor of historical theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and editor of The Lost Sermons of C. H. Spurgeon (B&H Academic)   "A fresh and artful treatment of two remarkable, gospel-shaped men. I’ve read lots of books on Charles Spurgeon. I’ve never read one like this one. Once you start it, you won’t put it down."  J.D. Greear, Ph.D., Pastor, The Summit Church, Raleigh-Durham, NC    "Steal Away Home is the collaborative work of a pastor who specializes in truth, and an artist who specializes in beauty. Their subjects are a titan of truth and beauty in his own right, the great "Prince of Preachers," Charles Hadden Spurgeon, and his lesser known yet no less significant friend, missionary and abolitionist Thomas Johnson. While claiming to write historical fiction versus pure biography, Matt and Aaron have done a great job honoring two men whose profound impact shares a common thread: neither outgrew his need for Jesus and the gospel. As a preacher and aspiring abolitionist myself, I am moved by this volume not only to be a better minister, but to remain thirsty for our freedom-fighting, truth-telling, and beautiful God."  Scott Sauls, senior pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee and author of Jesus Outside the Lines, Befriend, and From Weakness to Strength "We are all craving God-fearing, humble, bridge-building examples of faith and friendship. Charles and Thomas are just that. I found myself relating and yet craving more for my own life. Prepare to be moved and changed by these men's lives. The two men writing this book, Aaron and Matt, share a unique friendship on mission too, and I'm blessed to sit under their leadership weekly in our local church. They are humble seekers of God's glory, who desperately desire the same things today Charles and Thomas desired... men to be saved and know the love of God."Jennie Allen, Visionary Leader of IF:Gathering, Author of Nothing To Prove

Church history is filled with stories of courage, adventure, adversity, and persecution. From the exile of Athanasius, the martyrdom of John Rogers and William Tyndale, or Luther’s trial at Worms, these stories are well-known and we are quick to pass them along to the next generation.Steal Away Home by Matt Carter and Aaron Ivey is a tale that will be new to many readers, however. It was certainly new for me! The story involves two men from backgrounds that have very little in common. C.H. Spurgeon was the Prince of Preachers, a refined man with a rich theological heritage who occupied the pulpit in Victorian England. He was well-known around the world. He was a best-selling author and recognized by thousands. Thomas Johnson was a simple slave boy who was unjustly shackled in colonial America. He was known by few and treated like an animal. His slave master worked him to the bone on the Virginia tobacco fields.Jesus Christ liberated Thomas Johnson. He freed him from the power and the penalty of sin. President Abraham Lincoln rescued Thomas Johnson from the sin of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln regarded as the crowning achievement of his presidency, liberated Thomas from his slave master. Jesus Christ liberated Thomas from the slave master of sin.Through a series of Providential events, Thomas Johnson found himself at the front door of C.H. Spurgeon in London. After his training was complete, he and his wife made their way to Cameroon, West Africa in 1879.PERSONAL TAKEAWAYSSteal Away Home is a work of historical fiction. It becomes clear at the outset, however, that the authors spent many hours researching the details of this intriguing story. My hope is that a few personal takeaways will prompt many people to enter rich world of the 19th century and absorb some life-altering lessons.1. The Humanization of C.H. SpurgeonI have been reading Spurgeon and books about the Prince of Preachers for almost thirty years. This book brilliantly captures the essence of Spurgeon and is not afraid of revealing his warts, weaknesses, and worries. It is a breath of fresh air for anyone who is under the false notion that the famous preacher from London lived a life of ease. Spurgeon’s doubt and lifelong battle with depression is highlighted and his fears are revealed.2. The Horror of SlaveryMost Americans recognize that slavery is a perpetual “black eye” on our nations’ history. But few understand the gravity of what these innocent African Americans endured. Carter and Ivey masterfully reveal the pitiful nature of slavery through the eyes of Thomas Johnson. Sympathetic readers will feel genuine grief as they walk with Johnson and experience the horror of his chains.3. The Hallowed Ground of FriendshipSteal Away Home reminds readers of the importance and value of friendship. The friendship fostered by Spurgeon and Thomas is grounded in grace and nurtured by honest communication, genuine fun, rich encouragement, and biblical accountability. Like David and Jonathan, these two men are examples of friendship that glorifies God. Indeed, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Prov. 18:24). Indeed, friendship is hallowed ground that too few men tread upon.4. The Hope of the GospelFinally, this story shows how the gospel operates in the real world. Apart from grace, Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson were dead in trespasses and sins, without hope and without God. Indeed, apart from grace, Spurgeon and Johnson were both spiritual slaves. Both men, however, were set free as they cast their hope on the Lord Jesus Christ. In the course of their very different earthly paths, they wound up on the same spiritual path, which ultimately led them both to the Celestial City!Steal Away Home encouraged me personally and moved my soul in ways that most books only hope to do. Matt Carter and Aaron Ivey stepped up to the plate and hit the ball out of the park. Their work will no doubt be a contender for book of the year. I commend their work wholeheartedly!I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

It's been a long time since a book made me weep as I did in the final pages of Steal Away Home. There is so much beauty in this story, in the writing of it, and—most of all—in the Gospel which saturates it, that there really was no other way to respond but through tears of joy for God's victory over sin and death, mingled with tears of sorrow for the brokenness which still mars our world until Christ returns to consummate that victory.I have read a lot of books by and about Charles Haddon Spurgeon. But I can truthfully say I've never encountered anything like this book, both in its scope and style. The book's authors, Matt Carter & Aaron Ivey, are two of the elders at The Austin Stone Community Church, a church whose ministry has often encouraged and inspired me. While visiting the Stone last May for what they call a Worship Pastor Intensive, Aaron shared with us about how co-writing this book had been such a blessing in his life; I pre-ordered it on the spot. While the book is somewhat biographical, its genre is difficult to identify due to its unique nature. In the introduction, Carter states that the book's style was inspired by Michael Shaara's excellent book The Killer Angels, a novelized story of the Civil War focusing on the lives of several historical figures. Steal Away Home is written as a novel in which the main characters are the 19th century preachers Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson. If you're like me, you're reading that second name and saying, "Who?"The fact that Johnson's name is relatively unknown is a real tragedy! His story is truly fascinating, and the impact he had on the Kingdom of God is immense, both as a missionary to Cameroon and as a much-needed encourager and friend to the "prince of preachers."Thomas Johnson had been a slave for 28 years in Virginia when the end of the Civil War brought about his emancipation. Though he had heard the name "Charles Haddon Spurgeon" (when he was forced to accompany his master and a Baptist preacher to a book burning in which the works of Spurgeon—an outspoken abolitionist who openly challenged slave-holding "Christians" in the American South—were read to slaves before being thrown into the fire), he never dreamed he would have the opportunity to meet with him, much less become his friend.Providentially, God allowed Johnson to be sponsored to attend Spurgeon's Pastor's College in London, to be trained and commissioned as a missionary to Africa. During his time in London, and for decades later, Johnson became one of Spurgeon's closest friends and confidants. Spurgeon's lifelong struggle with depression and physical ailments are well known. But the way Johnson spoke truth into Spurgeon's life, teaching him about true freedom in Christ, has remained mostly obscured from history until now. I'm so grateful to Carter & Ivey for telling his story! While the narrative and much of the dialogue for this book required some "artistic license" from the authors, as often as possible the words and "voice" of the characters come from their own writing, primarily their frequent correspondence (Spurgeon kept all of Johnson's letters in the desk in his study), and from Johnson's own autobiography, Twenty-Eight Years a Slave or the Story of My Life in Three Continents (Classic Reprint). The book was thoroughly researched at the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the fact that so many prominent Spurgeon scholars have endorsed the book lends a lot of credibility to the historicity of the story.I can't imagine more capable hands for the telling of this story than Carter and Ivey. I know of no other ministry so invested in story-telling as Austin Stone (learning more about their Story Team is one of the main reasons I attended the Intensive in the Spring). The story is beautifully told, and I wholeheartedly commend it to you.

Carter and Ivey, in Shaara like fashion, provide a glimpse into the lives of Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson. Reading this book was both enjoyable and inspiring. This genre is unique in that it's informed by history and detailed by the authors. The writing and the themes contained are easy to read, see, and be encouraged by. The story itself is masterful. This was a book that I would have welcomed dozens of more pages. The authors did the research and kindly provide readers with a heartfelt tale of friendship, God's sovereignty, and redemption. I'll be certain to pass this along to friends and family alike.

I had this book on my wish list as a "just in case" book. I was surprised when I received it from my wife for Christmas. Since we celebrated early this year I decided to bring it along on our Christmas babysitting vacation (grandkids). While it seemed a bit slow to begin with it soon turned into a compelling story revealing a side of CHS rarely seen. This book helped me to see that while Spurgeon was a great man, he was only a man. It turned him into a human being. The interaction between Thomas Johnson and Spurgeon was second only to David and Jonathan! I do not read very fast and was pleasantly surprised to finish this book well before Christmas (even between diaper changes, etc). The account of the Jubilees of Spurgeon's birthday and Johnson's emancipation was so moving that I found myself weeping at the end of the chapter. I realize this is a somewhat fictional account but I am sure there was adequate research to qualify this as high quality biographical "fiction". This book has given me a greater comprehension of slavery in the South and a deeper appreciation for my own life and relationship with my wife.freed-indeed.blogspot.com
