It took me a while to get into this book but in the end I really enjoyed it. There were many new facets to the story and outright differences from the Disney movie (all of the books in the Twisted Tales series are retellings of the Disney movies) as well as filling in obvious gaps/plot holes. I really enjoyed the subtle nods to the movie as well as the empowering of Belle. She was a strong character in the movie but in this book she has even more agency and thereby is even more awesome. This story gets really dark and upsetting at the end. It's not quite Stephen King but you may want to be mindful. I suppose it's not much of a spoiler to say that the asylum only hinted at in the movie is more prominent and it is exactly what real asylums were like in the past. If descriptions of what was done to patients would disturb you or your child, then you may want to skip parts at the end.Speaking of the ending, it was lovely. A different sort of happily ever after but one I wholeheartedly support. I kind of wish this was the story for the new live action remake.

What a disappointment this book was. I'm the biggest fan of the original Disney film, and although this book did have its upsides, it still sucked big time, right up to the incomplete, unsatisfying (non-) ending. The premise of the book was very interesting, but it was so badly handled that it made me regret the time I wasted reading it.My favorite part of "Beauty and the Beast" was, of course, the relationship between Belle and the Beast. Here, their relationship is downplayed in favor of the social/moral issues related to the persecution of "Les Charmantes" and a whole long backstory about Maurice and Belle's mother that I frankly didn't care that much about. If I wanted to read about the evils of discrimination and persecution of innocents, I would read a historical or contemporary novel, not a book based on a Disney fairy tale. Some parts of the story didn’t even make sense. For example, the magical rose turned into dust when Belle touched it, messing up with the curse. Why??? There was nothing in the spell the enchantress put on the prince (in either this book or the original movie) that said that the magic rose couldn't be touched by anybody, much less that it would turn to dust or complete the curse. The only statement was that the spell had to be broken before the last petal fell, which a completely different thing. In fact, the rose was from the enchantress’ own garden, so chances are Belle had touched it before, same as the rest of the flowers in her house.Another issue I had was Belle finding out about the Beast’s curse from the beginning, completely changing the moral of the original story, which was that she could love him without knowing he actually was a prince in disguise.I also found a little strange that the villain of the story didn’t even think of using the “les charmantes” magic for himself, which seems out of character for somebody as evil as him. It would have given the villian an even stronger motivation for his "experiments". Speaking of the villain, I easily found out who he was almost from the beginning of the story, so the "great revelation" of his real identity fell completely flat.2 good things about this book: It was only 99 cents, and it made me want to re-watch the original Beauty and the Beast a dozen times more to forget this version exists.

When reading this particulate take on the 1991 Disney classic, I found it to be a quite enjoyable read. I love how we get to see who belle's mother is; both as the enchantress that cursed the beast and who she was when Maurice first met her. What was going on with the beast really set that he has a heart and it really made in more sympathetic as the story when on. Belle was level headed and proactive as she should be. Even thought they don't get much time devoted to them, I still like the enchanted objects but really wish they had more of a role in this story. Really, I'm just nitpicking. Love the portrayal of Maurice's past and the current change to the status quo. Loved how in character everyone is, especially that one deeper look into a certain character later on. Overall, a pretty good read.

This is honestly one of my favorite retellings of the Beauty and the Beast mythos. It has a wonderfully detailed backstory, character development, and feels natural when it takes its ‘twist’.Beloved characters are seen in new situations to give them more depth. As the plot grows, each page you turn will be exiting and filled with wonderment.Highway recommend this book and this author and her series!

Anyone that loves the original story will still love this book. its exciting, fresh and some parts mix and mash into the story we all know by heart. I now cant imagine Belles mom being anyone else!

I collect any and every retelling of Beauty and the Beast that I can get my hands on. This version was beautiful and nostalgic describing detailed scenes straight out of the Disney animated film. And the twist with Belles mother as the enchantress still kept an element of surprise and intrigue. I loved that Belle’s internal diologue referenced the many books she read, and used those to influence her decisions and thought processes. This felt so true to character. I definitely want to read the other books in the twisted tale collection

It was a fun read and I enjoyed the twist on the fairy tale. The writer also added good depth to the beast and Belle's characters, and raised some of the stakes. Its clear this author spent a lot of time pulling apart the original story, and even more time piecing it back together in a way that is refreshing yet true to the original story. (To be honest, I wish the recent movie had pulled more ideas from here when trying to fill in plot holes and character development. So if the movie left you wanting more, or something different, then this might be a good book for you :)

Great book! It was a little hard for me to start but loved that it followed the Disney version a bit and then it twisted. But I loved the twist it kept my interest and the last few chapters I couldn't put it down. I love the change in fairy tale stories. Don't we all think what if this happened or that?

I just finished this book, having consumed it as soon as it arrived. (Well, as fast as I could considering I work full time and have three little kids and a wife, but you know what I mean). I am a Van Halen fan and gained a deeper respect and appreciation for the band after reading this book. I've always loved their albums but have taken them for granted until now. I was three years old in 1978, so pretty much every memory involving the band or hearing their name and their music came with the assumption they are undisputedly awesome. They defined hard rock for my entire life. Just the name "Van Halen" was synonymous with ass-kicking.Now, having read this book, I realized what set them apart from so many awful clones: They worked their asses off for years before hitting it big, against the crazy tide of commercial music that hated what they represented. It seems like most bands since Van Halen want fame immediately and are unwilling to put in the work to build their name up. Having read this book it is absolutely NO WONDER they exploded within a year of their debut album hitting the stores. I absolutely loved the stories from the "big" bands at the time for whom Van Halen opened -- Black Sabbath, Journey, etc. -- regretting having to follow these young upstarts. Van Halen were starving by the time they landed a tour, and were primed and ready. The big bands at that time -- and no disrespect is implied here -- hadn't seen anything like them and were on automatic pilot, it seems. (Such a kick that Sabbath were supporting an album called "Never Say Die" when they were clearly dying a slow death night after night.)Probably the biggest thing I came away with after reading Van Halen Rising was a deep respect for David Lee Roth. Look, you either love him or hate him. I've vacillated between one or the other in the years of being a VH fan. I now can say I love the guy. He's taken his licks since Day One when he took voice lessons in school. No one has ever praised VH for vocals the way one praises Led Zeppelin, Journey, etc. But without a doubt were it not for his style, incredible DRIVE, and an unfathomable amount of faith and hope (and those aren't just the names of a couple of strippers in Vegas) Van Halen as we know it would not exist. He changed their look and broadened their soundscape. He compensated for his vocals with incredible charisma. The man is smart and savvy, and I can tell he knew he was lucky when Ed and Al let him into the fold. They no doubt knew they were lucky to have a guy fight so hard to help them become a best-selling act.The interviews are well-sourced. I loved hearing Ted Templeman's stories, including that he wanted to replace Roth with Sammy Hagar but relented when he heard Roth's lyrics. To this day that's one of the biggest differences between those two iterations of Van Halen. Good to hear from Michael Anthony -- who I felt sorry for when I saw the pics to the clothes he had to wear the first concert he played in -- and good to hear from Mark Stone, the guy he replaced.I'm giving this 4, not 5 stars for aesthetic reasons only. This looks like a vanity press, self-published book. I know it is not endorsed by VH, I get it. But the ink on some of the pages were lighter than others and at times somewhat difficult to read. I would have loved for this to have been published by a better publisher, and certainly in hardcover. It was clearly written by a fan who took it upon himself to fill a void that many of us wanted filled, but the quality/presentation of the book FELT like it was written by a fan, if that means anything. I'm that specific kind of book nerd. So sue me. Of course most of the photos in here were not professionally done -- probably taken from a friend at the party, but as a rock bio fan I would have killed for a middle section of some color photos. But I hope you hear from this review that the quality of the story itself is very satisfying and made me appreciate Van Halen more than ever. I read that the author is considering a sequel. I would LOVE to read about the rest of the Roth years in similar detail. Thanks Greg Renoff for taking the time to write this book.

I saw Van Halen at least 20 times at backyard parties and small venues that they sold out themselves. I then saw a dozen shows of the first tour alone. This book nails what I saw and the people like Rudy Lieren who was Ed's longtime guitar tech that I spoke with. His research is truly amazing, his sources are listed throughout this book. It takes you from the band members early days right up until they get signed. It's the most comprehensive book on those early days I have ever seen. A must for VH fans or any rock fans.

First and foremost, I am a lifelong Van Halen fan since 1978.I have been following the band since I moved to L.A., and my youth was formed around the music scene there since 1978 to 1985.The book provides me some refreshed memories of backyard parties and auditorium gatherings where bands played live. I wish I had seen the mighty Van Halen in its formative years but this book takes you back in time.I have my memories of what bands I saw but now I can certainly see where all the luster and bluster for hard rock comes from. I just saw them in concert this year and was glad that the book plus the tour made the summer even more special for me, as a fan.In researching the young Van Halen's youth, particularly bringing us in to their teens years, you can learn so much about who they are today.Especially their relationship as brothers, as band mates to each other, and their relationship with one David Lee Roth.I am glad Greg Renoff put this well written story of my favorite band together.I am on my second re-read and much like Dave's Crazy from the Heat, I cannot put it down.If you love music, and if you love success stories with great background I strongly recommend Van Halen Rising!

As a music lover and miserable wannabe player I read a lot of this type of book. In fact I read Sammy's and Valerie's works quite a while ago. I don't know what to even say about this effort. I've never seen anything like it. It's SO well-researched, and written by not just a fan but someone that knows something about music.I jumped on this because of the great reviews and never considered that it might not be a complete biography of the band. You click on this before all synapses are firing if you are some of us. I was in a world of book-reading where "it's too good to be true". Then we were done and it dawned on me that the title of the book indicated the scope. Bummer, but it is still one of the most fulfilling books about one of my music heroes that I have ever read and I am going to scour the landscape for another Renoff project.

This is a great book on Van Halen’s early days. I have always been a huge fan. I grew up in Pasadena/San Marino and was 10 when Van Halen’s first album came out. It is great to have addresses because I know so many of these locations, but I had no idea exactly where the parties took place. I still live here now and have driven by now that I have the addresses. I’ve known where the Roth mansion is for years. It was a Pasadena Showcase House many years ago when Roth was at the height of his career and you could buy tickets and take a tour. One of my moms friends was volunteering at the showcase house and a gardener came up to her in his dirty overalls and asked her for a quarter for the vending machine. She gave it to him. When she told one of her friends about the gardner and pointed him out, her friend said “That’s not the gardner, that’s the owner of the house, David Lee Roth.”Greg Renoff has done a great book job with this book and for someone like me it’s perfect. I would like him to write a book about the next chapter of their career - the studio recordings and what took place in the studio and during this time with as much detail as he has this first book. I know he’s writing a book about Van Halen’s producer, Ted Templeman, who I’m also a huge fan of. So I’m really looking forward to that book.

I have used Quicken for years. Every update is a better version of the previous. We have three bank accounts so it pays to keep track of the checking accounts and Quicken does a great job. I love the "memory", in other words once you enter the data Quicken remembers and auto enters for you. But be careful to change the amounts. As time goes by data entry is faster and faster because of this feature. Charts, budgets, taxes are many other benefits and it all flows into Turbo Tax quite easily. I do recommend you buy the Quicken instruction book if you are a first time user.

It is very nicely done. It has MANY diagrams, pictures and instructive notes throughout. I recently received it so I haven't been able to assess its COMPLETE usefulness. It does have color coded chapter marks on the page edge so once you get an idea of what color you need for particular info, you'll find it quickly. The wide page format makes the book stay open where you need it, but it might be problematic if space is at a premium. All in all I am glad I got because a program as complex and useful as Quicken has LOTS of useful features and they are not all immediately apparent so you'll need a reference source to find them and learn how best to use them.

Great software to keep bank and tax records.

Needed to stay on top of quicken updates and need reminders once in a while. Handy.

In general I liked this product it is very complete and explanatory. It covers from simples use to extended applications.

- Fairly easy to read- Find the section which describes what you're looking for and follow along.- Color illustrations are helpful.- Pleased with the book, but at this point video tutorials are probably even better.

Very helpful and the instructions are to the point

Very well written story. Would recommend this to everyone. I've enjoyed this author for many years. You will have a great adventure with this story.
