So Knaak is Knaak and if you spend any time talking about WoW lore you probably know he's a pretty controversial writer--not for WHAT he writes, but for the quality and enjoyability of how he writes. To me this is arguably his best book. There is a LOT happening that could have been possibly toned down (I don't know how many of the subplots were required from on-high, but at least some of them feel like Knaak-specific stuff). There's a lot going on, some of it feels sloppy, but most of it is interesting. It answers some major questions I think people getting into the lore might have and while it causes some new ones that are left unanswered in lore in general, none of those felt very major. If you like Varian, I think it's a good idea to read this one.

The book is one of unique taste. I don't think it was bad, just I'm not interested in Night elves. I bought this book because I thought it will be about the guy on the cover Varian. When in fact more than 70% of it is about Night elves and their mystery assassin. If I wasn't such a Varian fan I'll give this a book a thumb down. The book title said wolfheart, so you expect to see most of the book talk about worgens and Varian but it did not. The assassin killing highborne should have been side story at best not the main piece. If the worgen and King varian plot switch places with the night elf and the assassin plot it would be a whole new story. I meant the book should be called Jarod's journey not wolfheart because it barely dealt with the subject. I'm just saying, if you want to buy this book to know more about Varian or the worgens don't. Just read wiki page. If you want to know more about the night elfs then go and buy it. I insist, the title though is misleading as hell

I am so happy there are excellent writers like A. Knaak who can sincerely portrait a game universe, especially one of the richest of all (Warcraft), and still make the story very interesting. I hope they give him all the significant Blizzard novels, if not all, to write instead of the extremely boring and nauseating Christie Golden. This story focuses on all the significant events concerning the alliance just prior to the cataclysm, with a special focus on the night elves. Here you will follow the journey which the Worgens took to join the alliance, as well as some insight into their origins. You will witness the return of the highborne into the night elf society, and the beginning of the effect of mortality on the night elves. Nearly all the known night elves make an appearance. Meanwhile, the horde, under Garrosh himself, attack Ashenvale using some new tactics. Varian Wrynn is on of the main focuses in this novel, as well as his relationship with the Worgen. If you enjoy the Warcraft lore, I highly recommend this novel to you.

I bought this book for my husband for Christmas. He's read all the other World of Warcraft books and he'd been mentioning for a while that he wanted to add Wolfheart to his collection. As is usual with him, he finished the book in just a few days. Actually, he can usually do it in about a day, but I had a baby in October and he's been a stay-at-home dad since I went back to work at the end of November. He said he enjoyed the book, although he prefers the stories that are written by Christie Golden better. Apparently, Knaak has a habit of incorporating dragons into his books even when it's not quite appropriate. Also, the story bounces around quite a bit and it can be hard to keep track of what's going on. Other than that, my husband liked the book and was on Amazon less than an hour after he finished it, looking to see if any more World of Warcraft books were scheduled to come out soon. I know I'll be keeping an eye out for them as well.

I loved this book a lot and for several reasons. For one it digs deeper into WoW lore and connects gaps created from the game and short stories Blizzard had published on their WoW community site. I personally play all Horde characters on World of Warcraft but this didn't stop me from enjoying a book about Alliance characters. The story centers mainly around King Varian Wrynn of Stormwind and the re-acceptance of Gilneas into the alliance. Varian has some serious issues about Gilneas and its choice to back out of the conflicts that claimed most of his family and home, thus creating unease among Alliance leaders. The night elf leaders Malfurion and Tyrande know that having the Worgen as part of the Alliance is essential to its survival but underestimate how far Varian's hatred goes. Maiev Shadowsong of Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne and briefly the Black Temple raid in Burning crusade, makes a return in this story and even plays a pivitol role which kind of sets her up for some inclusion in the game later on. She's just as fanatical as before in whatever task is presented to her but this time she is hindered by the return of her brother Jarod Shadowsong, a former night elf general from earlier wars. If you love WoW lore even a little bit this one is a must read. It felt a lot more focused and better kept my interest than Knaak's last book Stormrage, which was still an excellent book, but this one definately felt a lot better once I'd reached the end. It is worth $8(I bought the Kindle edition) and defiantely worth the time it takes to read.

The title can be misleading, but it does explore how Varian developed into who he is. So if you wondering well how did he go from being a jerk and wanting to murder the horde outright to more level headed then read this. It also explores more into how Maeiv lost her mind as well. It may lack the initial kick of excitement, but it feels in a lot of gaps lore wise.

If you love Varian .. you will love this - not going to try and go into the specifics because each person will read and visualize differently. Although I'm more of a Christie Golden fan for WOW books, Knaak won me over with this one. Sorry Christie.

#224,051 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I've really enjoyed this book. My favorite part by far is the tech comparison in the early chapters. The authors go over the pros and cons of MongoDB and describe the use cases for it, and it's competitors. The examples are all in Ruby, but are readable (even for a JS dev). I was up and running in ~5 minutes and followed along in each chapter. At about 1/3 of the way in, I felt I had a firm enough grasp to be able to implement it into my own project.Coming from a relational (MySQL) background, the concept of a NoSQL DB was intriguing but took a bit of getting used to ("you don't have to design your schema up front?"). Storing and receiving data in a JSON-based format felt right at home after working with web frameworks and this book provides some great samples.

Very good

Great read, but I am a MongoDB novice. I have not finished the book, but what I have read has helped move me forward with my MongoDB project.

Great book for developers and database administrators as well. I really like the way the book it's organized.

Good book to start learning about MongoDB

This updated edition is aimed at software developers, but it doesn't ignore those of us who are more "casual" users of MongoDB. Indeed, this is an excellent book for newcomers to MongoDB, especially if you are patient and willing to read through an introductory chapter focusing on "MongoDB's history, design goals, and application use cases." Many people, of course, just want to jump straight into downloading software, running it, and playing with it for a while before getting down to serious stuff such as application use cases. So Appendix A is the place to go for getting MongoDB onto Linux, Mac, or Windows PCs. Then, once you have MongoDB installed, you can jump back to Chapter 2 to start learning how to use the JavaScript shell. After that, things start getting more "practical." For example, Chapter 3 introduces "Writing programs using MongoDB." Here, Ruby is used to work with the MongoDB API, but the author notes: "MongoDB, Inc. provides officially supported, Apache-licensed MongoDB drivers for all of the most popular programming languages. The driver examples in the book use Ruby, but the principles we’ll illustrate are universal and easily transferable to other drivers. Throughout the book we’ll illustrate most commands with the JavaScript shell, but examples of using MongoDB from within an application will be in Ruby."I won't try to sum up everything in this well-written, 13-chapter book. I have used older, 2.X versions of MongoDB in MEAN stack applications. And, separately, I have worked a bit with Ruby and MongoDB. But in each case, I haven't needed to learn all that much about MongoDB itself, mainly just ensure that it is storing data that can be accessed in the right place and updated, saved or deleted as needed. So this book, written for 3.0.X (and later, as well as earlier) MongoDB releases is an eye-opener for me and one that I will keep around for reference and more learning now that I have upgraded to 3.2.Part 1 of this 2nd edition "provides a broad, practical introduction to MongoDB." Part 2 offers "a deep exploration of MongoDB’s document data model." And Part 3 examines MongoDB "from the database administrator’s perspective. This means we’ll cover all the things you need to know about performance, deployments, fault tolerance, and scalability."One cautionary note: The author points out that "as of MongoDB v3.0, 32-bit binaries will no longer be supported." Of course, some 3.X 32-bit binaries are still out there, and you can install them, but you will get a lot of warning messages from MongoDB. Download a 64-bit binary if your system will support it.The author realizes that many readers who have some MongoDB experience will not read the book straight through but will jump around to chapters in many different orders and will even skip some chapters. And this is okay. MongoDB in Action: Second Editon is a book many of us will be happy to have handy whenever we need to get a better grip on some new aspect of working with this great open-source, document database.(My thanks to Manning for providing a review copy.)
