From former mobster Sal (Ubatz-crazy)Polisi we get a first hand account of "The Life" his Mafia career, from the 60s through the 1980s. Though Polisi was never a made man, requiring a kill to attain the honors, he shows just how profitable association with the Mob could be. He shrewdly opened the Sinatra Club, a haven for drinking, gambling, and prostitution. It was a joint that merged members of all the 5 Families socially for R&R. Something unprecedented! Polisis writing style is almost conversational, sometimes disjointed and repetitive. He touches upon all aspects of "The Life" and its interference on his marriage and kids. A host of Mob characters like John Gotti are described in detail, their strengths and flaws. He points out the similarities of actual mobsters with characters and situations in "The Godfather", "Goodfellas" and the "French Connection". The disintegration of the "Five Families" through drug pushing and internal wars is explored. The flamboyant careless swagger of John Gotti exhibits the disregard of the old ways ultimately bringing down the Italian Mafia. Polisi spends a lot of pages on his sexual exploits in a bragging fashion on his relations with whores; one in particular he desires marriage. Polisi dabbled in all endeavors of crime and points out how easy it was because the authorities were on "the take". It was like "Murder Incorporated", guys killed and got plea deals. Of course like so many of these hoodlums, Polisi became a rat, and lived to write about it. So this is a good down and dirty story, worth your attention.

As some of the reviewers say, the book got way too repetitive, and about the wrong things. We really didnt need to have 20% of the book be about this guys voracious sexual appetite which if 2/3 of it is true, he needed to be a porn star or have himself checked out for a very, very over-active prostate gland. -). That said, I bet money that while some of these things you heard before, there are definitely stories you did not here before! EG-Did you know that Tommy Desimone came within a hair of blowing away John Gotti? Did you also know that John had him killed years later for a different beef? And the stuff Sal lays out about the JFK assassination clearly being a mob hit is worth the price alone. No he cant offer any proof, but the things we know about the old bosses at that time, it all makes sense.Great stuff we never knew about Hoffa too. What I always wanted to know and this book finally answered is how much did the guys from the movies Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco and the movie Gotti know each other as the movies spanned 3 decades and different families. Sal shows us... a lot more than we thought! Now...did Sal leave out a lot of really bad things he did to get where he got and earn all this respect? Id say yes. He makes it seem like he is almost a nice guy but I do not buy it. I think that Steve Dougherty helped clean up a lot of things that would have turned us all off. But as far as a page turner...if you have a whole weekend off and its raining outside...this book could keep you busy. And Steve , you write with the easy reading style and clarity of a Pileggi, a Breslin or Gay Talese. I just want to know the biggest question, how could Sal have written this book and still be alive? He has to be one shrewd guy, this Polisi. I think it is because he had the class to not talk bad about any of the people in the book to anger their families. Both of them. Book is 384 pages and I read it in 3 days! Would give 5 stars if he didn't fill 20% of the book or more with his sex life and chasing women. Here's the summary:He was a good looking guy and a chick magnet to begin with, could spend money on anything a woman wanted, was lucky enough to almost never get caught stealing, and decided since tomorrow may never come, he decided to screw himself to death. The End! We should all be so lucky. -)

I've read every book I can find about The Mafia, and this one is amongst the best for sure. I couldn't put it down and stayed up all night to finish it in one sitting. Really cool, like being a fly on the wall in one of the many infamous mob social clubs in NYC's Little Italy. You will be completely immersed in this dangerous and secret underworld, but without the fear of being whacked or busted by the Feds like the real life characters you're reading about. I loved it!

This book was interesting enough, but it kind of bobbed and weaved throughout the story making it hard to follow the characters at times. Enjoyed and marveled at times how the crime and violence in his world was just so "everyday at the office" type of stuff. Wiseguy was a MUCH better written and interesting story to read.

I've read tons of Mob books. Sinatra Club is pretty good. Polisi details his friendships with infamous mobsters like John and Gene Gotti, Tommy DeSimone, Tommy Agro, Dom Cataldo. Foxy Jerothe, the Casanova of the Gambino borgata. The book is written with flair and verve and a bit raunchy. Polisi and Jerothe stealing millions while tomcatting with an endless parade of leggy blondes and brunettes. At times I laughed my butt off. There's a fair amount of Mob politics, as well as interesting sketches of the old Mob-connected communities. The Sinatra Club is a bloody slab of red Mafia meat.
