I enjoyed this book so much. The whole book is a thriller, with the writer managing to fit in enough for character introductions. However, the excitement did not ever let up. From the first page, the reader is caught up in the main character's dilemma, and I am not exaggerating when I say the tension is non-stop.The main character, a con man turned lawyer, pulls cons on everyone around him to try to solve his problems, and the writer takes the reader along with him. There are cons ,on top of cons, on top of cons, and I found myself not trusting anything that was going on, and not sure which characters I could trust to be good guys. The whole book takes place over a few days, and I found myself rushing through to see what happened. It was almost as if most of the book was actually the climax of the story!If you like thrillers, I highly recommend this book. I eagerly await his next book.
Pretty good. I came to this book searching blogs of Michael Connelley fans for recommendations of other authors. The Bosch stories are the gold standard in my opinion. I’ve read other recommendations from such blogs previously but Cavanagh is the only one I will read again. Granted, some of the plot requires serious suspension of disbelief, but Eddie Flynn is a well written and interesting and charismatic character. If you like Grisham’s Rogue Lawyer, I think you’d like this. The underworld interactions and relationships are the best part of the book to me. It took a little bit for the story to take off for me, but I read the second half quickly. And Cavanagh surprised me with a couple plot twists I didn’t see coming. Overall, a little fanciful but enjoyable and I will buy more of his books while I wait for the next Michael Connelley. I say give him a chance.
I found it very difficult to suspend my disbelief while reading this improbably-plotted thriller. Blowing up the court building was way too over-the-top, as was the bad guys telling Eddie about 20 times, "If you don't do what we tell you to do, we're going to kill your daughter." We get it--the daughter's in grave danger. I would not read a sequel to this book.
Very fast paced and an excellent first novel for Cavanagh. Twists and turns throughout. Many surprises. Told in the first person, the protagonist is interesting and well developed. Not squeeky clean, not a bad guy, but a mix of good and bad...maybe tending toward the bad side. Other characters, good and bad guys, are interesting and well defined. While some of the action would be far fetched, even impossible, for the average attorney, the protagonist has experience and background that make much of it believable...and fun. Many stories, even those by Dan Brown, Grisham, and Patterson, are often unrealistic, so this is not weirdly so. I think this could be the basis for a screenplay, and the film would be fun. I will be looking for more stories from Cavanagh.
This is a different genre that I usually read, but decided to give it a chance. I loved it. I didn't want to stop reading it and finished it in a couple days and immediately ordered book #2. Please keep them coming, they are fantastic. Eddie Flynn is a character who shows every emotion known and it makes him so relatable.
Enjoyable and lots of twists and turns...a good page turner. His lead character is easy to like and fun.. my only criticism , far to many references to his daughter situation....a constant theme...Overall a lovely diversion.
I am a Tom Clancy and John Grisham fan. While reading this book, I felt like it was equally as entertaining as these two writers. The plot and writing style was engaging. It kept me on the edge of my seat. A real page turner. A great read. Looking forward to reading all of his books. I predict that Steve Cavanaugh will be one of the new rising stars!
This is a first book, wow! I hope there will be many more to follow! There are some weaknesses in the writing, but the story moves fast and like an action movie keeps you preoccupied from noticing. I'm hoping the author continues to write and grows his talent without losing his momentum that he held in this book. I would recommend reading and I'm keeping Mr. Cavanaugh on my list of books wanted for his next ones.
