From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-This book sets out to reassure children: "Wherever you live, wherever you go, there are all kinds of families." As readers journey to the zoo with Nellie, Gus, and their family, they learn about where people live, what they eat, their habits and hobbies, and how their families are composed, including references to single parents and same-sex couples. The prose is unadorned and economical, but gentle, and perfect for very young children. Digitally created images are bright and welcoming and feature a host of multicultural characters and diverse families. The conversations between Nellie and Gus featured in speech bubbles alongside the illustrations sweetly reinforce the messages in the broader text: "Right, Gus. Don't worry. I can be your big sister and your friend. And I am!" This book should find a place in classroom libraries, guidance offices, and public libraries.-Alison Donnelly, Mississippi Valley Library District, Collinsville, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

This colorful, large-format picture book looks at families, all kinds of families, and all kinds of diversity. Families live in different places, eat different foods, and enjoy doing different things together. They have different numbers of children, who might be adopted, and different combinations of mothers and fathers, who might get divorced and possibly remarry. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents, and pets are family, too. The color of different family members’ hair, eyes, and skin may vary. They may sometimes be mad or sad, but families really do love one another. Teachers and parents looking for a picture book about diverse families will find this an obvious choice, with its clearly written, inclusive text and its large, cheerful illustrations, which show up well from a distance. At the same time, some will be put off by the book’s tone, which is unswervingly upbeat and purposeful. Still, a useful addition to library collections. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Very inclusive and matter-of-fact. Love that it includes same-sex parents, single parents, foster parents, separated/divorced parents, kids that are born or adopted into families, kids who live with relatives, etc etc without any sort of judgement. Love that it addresses how some families all look similar and some don't. Love that the family featured is interracial- like ours- since that is weirdly not present in a lot of books. Great illustrations, perfect for toddlers to get involved in the book and point out all of the different families, places, animals, and objects (my 1.5 year old loves doing this). I wish it came in Spanish, but otherwise no complaints. So easy to build upon the text to talk about families of all structures and nuances.

Another great book by this author! This book covers all different kinds of family structures -- including our own -- which is what we were hoping for. One thing I'd change is that there is a line that says "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families." I've recently learned that sometimes children who were adopted don't realize that they were born FIRST, and THEN they were adopted. I wish that sentence made it more clear that all children are born, and didn't set it up as an either/or (born/adopted). Even a very small change might help clarify this, like: "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families after they're born."There's another page where the author doesn't quite hit the nail on the head -- the sentence is, "Some children live with their mommy part of the the time and with their daddy part of the time." While that's certainly true, I'd make this even more inclusive by rephrasing it to "Some children live with one parent part of the the time and with their other parent part of the time." I know of some same-sex couples who split custody of their children, so this revised sentence would also include them. These are fairly picky points. Overall, I really do like this book, as well as others by this author.

Very culturally sensitive book. Though I had to leave out a couple of sentences due to regulations in my county, the pictures could have brought about conversations... AND allowing EVERY child to feel that their on family is normal. A family is a group of people who love and care for you, whether it is traditional, adoptive, foster, single parent, step parent, or any other combination out there. My K and 1st graders really enjoyed the story and were able to draw their own families doing things they love.

A bit wordy and not rhyming or such so we will see how my little one likes it, but this book does a wonderful job of being very inclusive. I have friends with triplets, two mommies, single parent, adopted child/ren, interracial families and other family types/qualities that are hard to find in a childrens book. This book has everything.

Perfect for helping children to understand concept of today's families. Nice and not preachy. Started a terrific conversation in the classroom with the kids sharing and accepting!

The book is a little long and wordy. It is a great book for opening the conversation about diversity and the differences between families no matter where they live or who makes up their family.

Great book to familiarize your children about all the different kinds of families you see today. You’ll see and/or read about multiracial parents, same sex parents, foster parents, single parents, step-parents, adoptive, and birth parents. Wonderful book! Wish there were more books like this.

We got this for a five year old who was really having trouble with understanding the concept of not only who is in the family but also who is not, and it was very very helpful and a delightful read. Examines nontraditional families, twins, different races... And each page has tons of adorable animals that the five year old turned into a game to see who could find the most.

Women, Minorities, and Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity, by Barbara B. Adams PsyD

Review

''Progress on diversity and inclusiveness can only be made if we also take a systems approach to understanding organizational behavior. Dr. Adams has written a true practitioner's handbook that clearly lays out the science that underpins diversity and inclusion best practices, while also addressing the emotions that drive the 'will' to change. Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People skillfully reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. The business case for diversity is more critical than ever, but it's not our only tool; as Dr. Adams establishes, 'if logic makes people think, emotions make people act.' This is a book for every practitioner's and leader's bookshelf.'' --Jennifer Brown, author of Inclusion: Diversity, the New Workplace, and the Will to Change ''If you can read only one book on diversity and inclusion, it should be Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People. Barbara Adams leaves no doubt about the destructiveness of discrimination and proposes creative, workable approaches to the difficult task of building and retaining a diverse, inclusive workforce. She compels readers to recognize and understand the urgency of dealing with hidden biases and corrects deep-rooted misconceptions that create impediments to a desirable work environment. This book offers a practical road map for reframing the thinking required to embrace the diversity and inclusion that make companies and organizations more successful. It is a must-read!'' --Ambassador Ruth A. Davis (Ret.), named to The Economist's 2015 Global Diversity List as one of the Top 50 Diversity Figures in Public Life ''A stellar resource for understanding workforce diversity in the 21st century and a practical guide on how to maximize the full creativity and innovation of people from all different backgrounds.'' --Joseph P. Gaspero, CEO and Co-Founder at Center for Healthcare Innovation ''Dr. Adams challenges many long-held hiring myths; that diverse talent simply isn't available; that diversity and inclusion issues and gaps can't be remedied. This book helps confront bias, reframes thinking, and provides companies with the framework and tools to implement an inclusion strategy that benefits employees, leaders, and shareholders.'' --PJ Moore, Senior Vice President at CGI, former Executive of Chase and IBM ''Dr. Adams compassionately 'cracks the code' for how to achieve inclusion through diversity as both business and moral imperative. Her book is a must-read for anyone who wants to make a positive difference and move the needle in the right direction toward rebuilding organizations that are equitable and inclusive. Through her masterful storytelling and impeccable research, Dr. Adams helps you to understand why it's important that everyone in your organization must be made to feel like they belong and belong uniquely.'' --Demetriouse Russell, founder at Venn Diagram Partners and former director at Harvard Business School Executive Education''This book is fantastic for practitioners; it is simple, concise, and focused on action. Barbara articulates the problem, explains the science, shows best practices, and provides solutions. She lays out the research in a way that is easy to follow in order to set the tone for evidence-based practice. Plus, she makes it easy to review the book for quick tips by including summary points and potential actions for each chapter. The key to making lasting, meaningful change in equity, diversity, and inclusion is to take a comprehensive, strategic approach to systemic change, and Barbara's book provides readers with the foundation to initiate their strategic plan.'' --Tie Wang-Jones, dual PhD in Clinical Psychology and Industrial-Organizational Psychology; Global Matrix Leader, Diversity & Inclusion at IKEA Group ''For as much as we talk about diversity and inclusion in the workplace, it is so misunderstood. What's distinct about this book is the depth of conversation and action it can inspire.'' --Bärí A. Williams, tech industry legal and operations executive, start-up advisor, former lead counsel for Facebook, creator of Facebook's Supplier Diversity Program

Insightful, practical and timely. This book explores both diversity and inclusion in a detailed way that invites you as the reader into the conversation. I take away one of the statements that the author makes that I couldn't shake off and it's There is a profound difference between diversity and inclusion, and trying to reach for one without the other shows only superficial commitment to change. I'm glad not just as a woman, but also as someone who is constantly working with young people from diverse backgrounds, that I got to read this book. Even though it was off NetGalley, I did get quite an awakening, especially on my biases.

This book is by far my favorite read of the year. It is heady, approachable and deeply important especially in today's corporate climate. I was so very affected by the first four chapters, took time to delve into the annotated reference material and even took the quizzes as linked. Barbara provides such a clear and easy to follow road map for self improvement in the areas of diversity and inclusion as long as the reader is open and honest with the results. I became stuck in chapter five when the focus shifts back to the organizational level implementation. I am only a part-time, remote employee of a small architectural firm, and while I see so much value in every aspect of the book, I was almost depressed that I wasn't able to share it with colleagues who could share my enthusiasm. In my role as a workplace strategist, however, I found many elements that I hope to weave into the dialogue I have with my clients and their staff and help to create design strategies to help implement diversity and inclusion where possible. I think that this work is incredibly important. I practically highlighted the entire book and am excited to move into a new position at some point in the future which will allow me to implement much more of the knowledge imparted throughout this book. Thank you, Barbara for taking the time to help move the needle.

I bought several “D&I” books over the holiday and "Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People" is by far the most informative, original and compelling. Adams' book is exactly what I was looking for. Relevant examples, challenging content that made me think and specific ideas and tools for building a plan. I especially appreciated the chapter, "Reframing Your Thinking." The framework for "thinking about differences" and the focus on evaluative thinking and mindfulness brought new perspective for me especially in becoming aware of own biases. I also appreciated the Conscience Inclusion behaviors from the work of Judith Katz and Fred Miller. These are gems! Meaningful and easy to practice.

Fantastic book! A great read not just for those in a business climate. Very insightful with a multitude of links to utilize. I couldn’t put it down. I recommended it to my book Club!

Really interesting and innovative. Lots of great ideas. A must read in this economic climate.

This is not a wall calendar. It has no hole from which to hang. Pages don't stay open. It's just a desk calendar. Pictures are nothing special. I threw in trash.

Adorable! Great quality! Def won’t be hanging it on the wall as it’s way too nice!! Not a bad thing at all! The pics are also beautiful!

No punch holes to hang the calendar, disappointing.

Once upon a time, the young Albert Einstein tried to imagine what it would be like to ride on a beam of light and what the universe would look like to that observer. Writing in his 1985 book, Comet, author Carl Sagan takes the reader on another imaginary journey. This time the observer is riding aboard a wayward comet traveling from the Solar System's outer fringe, around the sun and back into deep space again, giving the reader a birds eye view of what you would see on such a trip. Who knows where such "flights of fancy" can lead? The former; to a paradigm changing theory. And the latter; to an in depth look at a strange visitor from the depths of space. Part science, part history and, in the original hard-bound edition, a generous helping of classical and new art work. While the Kindle edition has the charts, graphs and many black & white illustrations the beautiful color paintings are either missing or rendered in B&W. While this does not diminish Sagan's text in any way, it would have been a nice addition to the overall reading experience. You have to wonder what the publishers were thinking when they OK'd this treatment of both Cosmos and Comet for e-reader release. The text itself is stunning, Sagan's knowledge seems unlimited and his writing skills were never better. This edition is the 1997 update by co-author Ann Druyan to include any new findings (to that point) and theories on comets and astronomy but you may want to use this book as a jumping off point to more recent writings. The history of comets and how they interacted with human society is fascinating and Sagan takes you back to the beginning, to our earliest records of comet sightings. What are comets made of? How are they formed? Follow the birth and life of our Mysterious Traveler on it's journey through the Solar System. The author covers the mechanics of how their orbits are created and the risk that comets may pose to our planet. If a large object, comet or meteor, ever struck the Earth it could have a devastating effect on our environment and all life, including humans. Has this ever happened? What is the connection between comets and meteorites? Sagan covers all this and more in this classic science book. The book closes with a section of extreme speculation and philosophy that the author offers up for your consideration, take it for what you will, just keep an open mind. From Sagan's point of view the future has boundless possibilities. Comets may be an unlimited resource of water, minerals and energy that we can mine for use in space-construction or colonization of other planets. I'm a big fan of the late great scientist/astronomer Carl Sagan. I've read most of his books and most are 5 stars...see my reviews. As a 40 year amateur astronomer I found Comet by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan done fantastically well. Carl was always great at explaining a complex subject for the non scientist and keeping a complex subject interesting and allowing the reader to want to continue reading.Comet has loads of beautiful pictures, drawings, and diagrams by very good artists especially my favorite Jon Lomberg (I bought a lithograph from him "First Baby on Mars"...absolutely wonderful). Back to Comet!Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan give a great 1/3 of the book to the history of what mankind thought comets were, from evil things that foretold famine, death for armies, earthquakes and any number of disasters, to gradually a more modern "dirty ice ball" approach. Then we learn the composition of comets. Some rich in organic matter with ices of methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide and mostly regular water ice plus some heavy water isotopes and a little silicates and metals. A huge "dirty iceball".We see the near comets with orbits starting beyond Jupiter to comets way way out in the far reaches of the Oort cloud where orbits around the sun may take 10 million years. We see the different "ices" that boil off at different spacings from the sun, with regular water ice being the last to go as comets get closer to the sun. We learn about comet comas, their tails and their nucleus heads. We learn some asteroids may be worn out comets as each time comets get close enough to the sun they slowly "die" as a meter or so of ice is boiled off until rocky silicates, and heavy metals like iron are left.We see the various extinction ages where most of the species on Earth were eliminated with comets crashing into the Earth as main contributors. We see about 69 million years ago, the extinction of the dinosaurs possibly by a comet impact, allowing mammals to evolve with no competition from the dinosaurs, allowing the evolution of man.Lots of history about many famous and not so famous scientists and ancient theorists, and how different religions from different countries perceived comets. Lots of theories on comet formation, where they come from, how many there are, and where they are now. Are we in danger of getting hit by one now! Explanation of the inner and outer Oort cloud and the far distant comets formed from the very beginning of the solar system. These comets have been in the cold about 10 degrees above absolute zero) for billions of years and the extreme low temperatures and extreme distance from the sun have allowed them no interaction with other solar bodies. This allows their composition to be basically unchanged since the beginning of the solar system. We see mans quest to find the composition of comets using high altitude U2 planes to get cosmic dust for study. Many spacecraft shot up for photos of comets, solar wind detection, and trying to get any comet particles. Fascinating stuff.Lots of info on the favorite comet Halley plus lots of information on the scientist Halley. Lots of other comets mentioned plus their orbits shown.Talk of possible future colonization of the comets in the Oort cloud and growing gigantic trees on the comet... miles high and wide! Kind of Sci Fi to me but interesting.Comet is a fascinating book both for the novice who has never seen a comet, the 40 year amateur astronomer like me, and the professional astronomer/scientist. All will appreciate this book. There is no difficult math. All will enjoy the many pictures and parents can show and tell their child from this book. Would make a great book for middle school, high school or a college astronomy 101 course. Also got out of this book there is so much that we don't know about comets, especially about the extreme orbit comets but we are learning more everyday. Do yourself and family a favor. Next time a naked eye comet event happens enjoy it. You may not even need binoculars or a telescope. Halley comes around every 75 years, some comets less time, some more time and some are never seen again explosion, decomposition or flung out of their orbits by gravitation slingshot effect by Jupiter or more reasons). Just a fascinating sight to see out your backyard sky. If you have the chance enjoy.I sure miss Carl Sagan. Even though he never knew of me, I knew of him and consider him a friend.

This book tells you a lot that you never thought to wonder about. What color are comets? Black. Why? Because ices are driven off by the sun, leaving dark carbon and silicon dust. Sagan and Druyan cover comets in world history as well as in the present day. And the only weak spot in my view is the pontificating that Carl can't resist inserting. But maybe you like that stuff. If not, there is plenty else to appreciate. Having said all that, the book is somewhat dated. Perhaps Ann Druyan will produce another update incorporating recent findings about comets and the Kuiper belt.

Bought this as a gift. Boyfriend really liked it and we happened to be viewing a meteor shower the week he read about it, which was neat; however, I did buy this explicitly because it was stated the book was signed and neither author had signed it. The seller apologized and refunded my purchase money... I know all they could do ad hoc was refund my money, but I was miffed that it stated signed and it was not at all! Three stars because it is a nice book, but that's Sagan's doing.

When I saw that there was a revised version out of Carl Sagan's wonderful book COMET, even though it is in paperback, I hurried to snatch it up. I noticed that the date of publication was close upon Sagan's death so perhaps that explains why there doesn't seem to be much that was different in it from the first edition. By all means, get the original edition, in hardback if possible, as it has wonderful color illustrations. This edition is fine for someone who needs to read Carl Sagan's wonderful writing on comets-its just that the original is so much better.

You can never go wrong with Sagan!

Sagan is so predictable,,, good material presented in a smooth, enjoyable manner...it is always the same. He is damned good and you will love this book.

ADORABLE!!!! What a cute YA story. I found this under Amazon's "other books you might like" suggestions and bought it on a whim. So glad I did! I loved every second of it."Adorkable" Sally Spitz has a problem...she's never had a real boyfriend and her BFF and mom are constantly setting her up on blind dates. Disastrous ones, and she's DONE. So she enlists the help of her childhood best friend and soccer star/golden boy, Becks, to keep them off her case. He becomes her fake boyfriend and the swoon-worthy, sigh-inducing moments begin...oh it was a sweet, fun ride!I have three boys and we're done...but let's just say if we had a fourth boy, Becks would be in the running for his name. ;) Loved him! And Sal was adorable...both were just such likable, well-written characters.I will definitely keep my eye out for hopefully more stories from the author. Loved her style of writing. I'm so surprised this is a debut...it read like it was written by a well-seasoned author! If you're a fan of YA, do yourself a favor and read this one!! Just be prepared for a book hangover... ;)

I honestly can't believe Adorkable is Cookie O'Gorman's début novel. Seriously? The writing was brilliant. It didn't feel like a début at all! It may have bordered on slighty corny at times, but it was so much fun I didn't care. Plus, it had my most favorite relationship trope ever: best friends to lovers (or best friends to dating because there's no lovers in this YA novel).I absolutely adored the story and the main characters. Sally was this geeky girl who didn't mind not being the most beautiful or popular girl in the room. She kept her eye on the future and what she wanted. Her only little insecurity was the crush she had on her best friend, Becks. She didn't think he would ever like her as more than a friend, so he seemed like the safest choice as her fake boyfriend. Sally just didn't think the "pretending" would be so hard or make her want him even more.Becks was the most popular and gorgeous guy in school. He could (and maybe did) have any girl of his choice, but he was totally willing to help Sally out. Becks had his own reasoning for being Sally's fake boyfriend, but he truly would have done anything for her. He wasn't just some popular athlete, he was a good guy and an amazing friend. As for the other characters in the story...There was one I have to talk about. I couldn't stand Sally's other best friend, Hooker. I had major problems with her. She wasn't a good friend at all. She obviously didn't respect Sally's thoughts or believe in her enough to allow Sally to find a boyfriend on her own -- if she wanted one. I get that Hooker wanted Sally to be happy, but she had a really poor way of showing it. She made me so mad! But without her, the story wouldn't have been quite as funny. Some of those dates...Adorkable was everything I love in a YA Contemporary Romance. It was an upbeat, funny and fast-paced read. I read it in one evening -- it was that good! It kept me smiling from beginning to end. If you enjoy YA contemporary romances, you should definitely check out this book. Cookie O'Gorman will be going on my YA must read list with Kasie West, Miranda Kenneally, Sarah Dessen and Ali Novak. I'm going to be keeping my eye out for her next release. I don't want to miss it!

The Good:I enjoyed the characters a lot. Their families and their history were believable and rich. Her use of details was excellent. Also, I am not bilingual, but I kind of loved that when she got upset she'd unknowingly rant in German.I enjoyed all the geek references--Harry Potter and Star Wars reigned supreme, Star Trek and X-men came in a close second, and a LOTR reference was thrown in for good measure (though, honestly, she seemed more of a movie geek than anything--how else can you explain Tombstone???).The feeling of the story was light and cute and hit a few swoon-worthy moments. The Not-So-Good:Hot Girl Thinks She's Ugly trope--Honestly, this one doesn't usually bother me because I relate to self confidence issues, but the way she was treated by everyone was so inconsistent that I couldn't figure out what was truth. The Girl Next Door and the All-American Boy and their seemingly willful Obliviousness to Love--I get it. Really I do. The I Don't Want To Ruin The Friendship thing is real, but they are SO oblivious it feels like it's stretching my suspension of disbelief just a tad too far.The movement from her never having a boyfriend/never kissing a guy/etc to making out hot and heavy with one didn't have enough progression.Missed opportunities and plot contrivances--There were moments when the plot felt very forced making some of the dialog feel forced. There were definitely a few moments where she hit it out of the park, but then there were a bunch where I was left wanting more.Overall:It was fun. I did enjoy it. The two of them are super cute and made me smile. The premise was great, and it scratched the lighthearted romcom itch, but I really wanted to rewrite it so that it hit all the notes in a way that felt natural.

Science and Spiritual Practices: Transformative Experiences and Their Effects on Our Bodies, Brains, and Health, by Rupert Sheldrake

Review

Praise for Science and Spiritual Practices “Rupert Sheldrake once again acts as a bridge builder between science and spirituality. . . Psychological and scientific studies are cited to underpin his findings, and an engaging account of his own life path helps to create a very accessible and authentic tone for the reader. . . [I]t’s a testimony to his courage and integrity that he continues to harness the horses of both science and spirituality to pull the chariot, and he drives his vehicle well.” ―Quest: A Journal of the Theosophical Society in America "I have personally adopted many of the practices Rupert Sheldrake describes in his book and experienced more love, joy, empathy, gratitude, and equanimity as a result. We are all indebted to Sheldrake, who has tirelessly brought us deep insights from both science and spirituality." ―Deepak Chopra, MD “A simultaneously grounded and inspiring approach to appreciating the benefits of both science and religion.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Few people today could have brought forth Science and Spiritual Practices other than the phenomenal Rupert Sheldrake. Rupert is not only a consummate scientist, having been formed in the powerful Western tradition's doctor of philosophy program (Cambridge), but is a person alive to the spirit. He is a practicing Christian in the Church of England, active in his local parish. He lived for two years at Shantivanam, the storied Christian ashram, headed by Abishiktananda (Henri LeSoux) and Fr. Bede Griffith in turn (Rupert’s sojourn there was during the time of Fr. Bede). In other words, he is a whole person, conscious and attentive to all the dimensions of his life: scientist, person of faith and spiritual practice, husband, father, friend. In this time of intense and, incredibly, increasing compartmentalization of life, Rupert is an integrated human being. The workshops at Kanuga, Esalen, Grace Cathedral, Hollyhock, and Wales that Rupert and I have led together have contained some of the seeds, I believe, of what has become this important contribution to our lives today, the book Science and Spiritual Practices. We should listen attentively when a person who has walked the path of integration so faithfully speaks, as Rupert has. I am personally grateful for the writing and publication of Rupert’s book, and not only endorse it wholeheartedly, but look forward to the support and depth it will bring to my own life." ―Marc Handley Andrus, VIIIth Episcopal Bishop of California "Urgent, vital, gently devastating, and an exhilarating read. Buy it, read it, and give it to all your friends and all acolytes of scientism. Sheldrake will help us stay alive and be more alive. We all need his help." ―Charles Foster, PhD, author of Being a Beast "I love this book! Few living scientists have the courage and the verve to ask the questions Rupert Sheldrake does, research them, and deliver answers in language all can understand. Be prepared as you read this book for an exciting and free-ranging ride, a sort of scientific pilgrimage journeying into spiritual practices and how they have benefited and can benefit humanity.” ―Matthew Fox, PhD, author of Original Blessing and A Way to God “If you hunger for an increase in the juice and tang of your life, biologist Rupert Sheldrake’s Science and Spiritual Practices is a magnificent starting point. It is CPR for modernity’s starved and sagging spirit―and is therefore crucial for our survival.” ―Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind “With accessible suggestions, clear arguments, and an encouraging tone, Sheldrake makes a good case for reincorporating bygone spiritual habits.”―Publishers Weekly “This is a refreshing and reflective work, a great contribution by a scholar whose intellectual life has been dedicated to showing connections among practice and polity, science and Spirit. His Science and Spiritual Practices reminds us clearly that everything is connected.” ―Jeffrey Patnaude, author, teacher, priest “For readers wishing to follow his path, Sheldrake offers advice on seven ways in which we can begin to appreciate the transcendent world of the Spirit . . . We learn how to connect with the more-than-human world of nature; to respect plants and explore the benefits of small orchards; to value rituals and experience pilgrimages; to enjoy the power of music through chanting. All these practices can deepen the meaning of our lives and open our minds to a universe flooded with consciousness.” ―Church Times

If you care about the confluence of science and spirit, if you have any curiosity at all about the mysteries of nature in its myriad forms, if you have even the vaguest inkling about Quantum Physics and is thrilling discoveries regarding the true nature of reality as we know it, then this clearly-stated, accessible, beautifully reasoned offering was written just for you. The London Sunday Times predicts that Rupert Sheldrake will, one day, "be seen as a prophet." Read this book -- read all his marvelous books! -- and you'll surely agree. Sheldrake's work is a gift to us all.

Science and Spiritual practice is a very critical look at the artificial division between science and spiritual practice as a form of cosmology and insight rather than dogmatic ritual or belief. In this book biologist, Rupert Sheldrake shares insights from his own work with plants and "fields".Those familiar with his work know that Sheldrake's science background and integration are unquestionable especially when viewed in the relevant context of a relevant to the whole, and that whole being the entire universe and no less. for there are no boundaries between the individual and thecosmos and Creation /Creator other than consciousness or lack thereofThis book is highly suggested for those who want to more fully experience the deeper level of true science which is based on curiosity and creativity, rather than scientific dogma.Throughout history "animism' and the soul of everything from atoms to living organism has been revered and understood as a part of the "science of living" in relation to Nature and thus the creative potential of the UniverseSpirituality is a method of integrating our seeming separation from Creation and Creator and healing the loss of wholeness that accompanies reductionist evolutionary scienceAs Darwin repeatedly stated. "It is love and mutual cooperation that defines the truly "fit"...and not a random selection.A conscious Universe and a conscious creator and a whole human being are thus closely relatedA wonderful cosmology to balance out our "pseudo-scientific "world that forgot that "mystery" in the essential Nature of all life and principles and living.

I like Sheldrake's book. I like his holistic approach to science and spirituality. It resonates with my personal experience. We live in a world where everything is connected to everything. Everything includes many things that we cannot see and/or perceive. But these things exist despite of our opinion about them. This book is easy to read and understand.

As someone who works and plays in the sciences and has struggled for years seeking the best personal spiritual path, I connected with this book. No matter your path, you'll find some connection here. Sheldrake's message is clear in the belief that belief is part of the human experience and has been since the start.

Science backedSpirit centered

--- but Isaac is his son, not grandson.(sorry, but I don't know where to tell this point)

It was very disappointing. I was expecting some interrelationship of the new scientific work on human powers or siddhis with spirituality. Instead, I think a bishop could have written this advocating Christian rituals.

It's just OK, with some insightful ideas about this topic.
