From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-This book sets out to reassure children: "Wherever you live, wherever you go, there are all kinds of families." As readers journey to the zoo with Nellie, Gus, and their family, they learn about where people live, what they eat, their habits and hobbies, and how their families are composed, including references to single parents and same-sex couples. The prose is unadorned and economical, but gentle, and perfect for very young children. Digitally created images are bright and welcoming and feature a host of multicultural characters and diverse families. The conversations between Nellie and Gus featured in speech bubbles alongside the illustrations sweetly reinforce the messages in the broader text: "Right, Gus. Don't worry. I can be your big sister and your friend. And I am!" This book should find a place in classroom libraries, guidance offices, and public libraries.-Alison Donnelly, Mississippi Valley Library District, Collinsville, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

This colorful, large-format picture book looks at families, all kinds of families, and all kinds of diversity. Families live in different places, eat different foods, and enjoy doing different things together. They have different numbers of children, who might be adopted, and different combinations of mothers and fathers, who might get divorced and possibly remarry. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents, and pets are family, too. The color of different family members’ hair, eyes, and skin may vary. They may sometimes be mad or sad, but families really do love one another. Teachers and parents looking for a picture book about diverse families will find this an obvious choice, with its clearly written, inclusive text and its large, cheerful illustrations, which show up well from a distance. At the same time, some will be put off by the book’s tone, which is unswervingly upbeat and purposeful. Still, a useful addition to library collections. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Very inclusive and matter-of-fact. Love that it includes same-sex parents, single parents, foster parents, separated/divorced parents, kids that are born or adopted into families, kids who live with relatives, etc etc without any sort of judgement. Love that it addresses how some families all look similar and some don't. Love that the family featured is interracial- like ours- since that is weirdly not present in a lot of books. Great illustrations, perfect for toddlers to get involved in the book and point out all of the different families, places, animals, and objects (my 1.5 year old loves doing this). I wish it came in Spanish, but otherwise no complaints. So easy to build upon the text to talk about families of all structures and nuances.

Another great book by this author! This book covers all different kinds of family structures -- including our own -- which is what we were hoping for. One thing I'd change is that there is a line that says "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families." I've recently learned that sometimes children who were adopted don't realize that they were born FIRST, and THEN they were adopted. I wish that sentence made it more clear that all children are born, and didn't set it up as an either/or (born/adopted). Even a very small change might help clarify this, like: "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families after they're born."There's another page where the author doesn't quite hit the nail on the head -- the sentence is, "Some children live with their mommy part of the the time and with their daddy part of the time." While that's certainly true, I'd make this even more inclusive by rephrasing it to "Some children live with one parent part of the the time and with their other parent part of the time." I know of some same-sex couples who split custody of their children, so this revised sentence would also include them. These are fairly picky points. Overall, I really do like this book, as well as others by this author.

Very culturally sensitive book. Though I had to leave out a couple of sentences due to regulations in my county, the pictures could have brought about conversations... AND allowing EVERY child to feel that their on family is normal. A family is a group of people who love and care for you, whether it is traditional, adoptive, foster, single parent, step parent, or any other combination out there. My K and 1st graders really enjoyed the story and were able to draw their own families doing things they love.

A bit wordy and not rhyming or such so we will see how my little one likes it, but this book does a wonderful job of being very inclusive. I have friends with triplets, two mommies, single parent, adopted child/ren, interracial families and other family types/qualities that are hard to find in a childrens book. This book has everything.

Perfect for helping children to understand concept of today's families. Nice and not preachy. Started a terrific conversation in the classroom with the kids sharing and accepting!

The book is a little long and wordy. It is a great book for opening the conversation about diversity and the differences between families no matter where they live or who makes up their family.

Great book to familiarize your children about all the different kinds of families you see today. You’ll see and/or read about multiracial parents, same sex parents, foster parents, single parents, step-parents, adoptive, and birth parents. Wonderful book! Wish there were more books like this.

We got this for a five year old who was really having trouble with understanding the concept of not only who is in the family but also who is not, and it was very very helpful and a delightful read. Examines nontraditional families, twins, different races... And each page has tons of adorable animals that the five year old turned into a game to see who could find the most.
