If you want to know why the revolution you will find it all here. This is an excellent book and I probably should have given it a five (originally I gave it a 4). I am probably a bit too picky but the author's use of language, while consistently engaging, lively, informative, colorful and descriptive occasionally messes up a metaphor. Like I said, I'm way too picky--I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know the fascinating back story of the Cuban revolution and a reasonable explanation for the incredible longevity of the Fidelista state. It certainly won't put you to sleep--maybe that is the highest compliment I can give a popular history account. I just went back and changed my rating. With out preaching, the book describes the utter moral bankruptcy of the collection of Cuban gangsters, large landowners, rich factory owners and others in the Cuban elite who eagerly sold their country out to the highest bidder--which just happened to be the American mob.

Throughout my thirty years as a history teacher, I never had any interest in the history of the Mob. And then I read Havana Nocturne. This is one terrific read. The author tells not only the history of organized crime in Cuba, but also the political history of the island--how Batista staged a coup in 1952 and how Fidel Castro used the abuses of American corporations and the political corruption by the gangsters to foment revolution.Along the way, the book includes profiles of mobsters like Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, Santo Triffficante and Albert Anastasia. He also discusses the glamorous night life of Havana in the 1950s. I would highly recommend this book to any history buff or anyone interested in the history of organized crime in America.

Besides the riveting history of the Mob’s infiltration of Havana in the 50s, this entrancing book paints an illustrious portrait of the city as the entertainment capital of the world at that time. The author, not unjustly, conjures up Rome during it’s fall as the only comparable precedent. Having just returned from a short stay in Havana, the contrast with the depictions in this book are stark and saddening. However, I did drive in an 1956 convertible pink American automobile from the Meliá Habana to the Tropicana where I enjoyed probably the best cabaret show ever experience it perhaps for a short few hours a very small taste of what the city was like during its heyday.

I read this as I was gearing up for a trip to Cuba. I liked the perspective and it brought to life Havana in the 50s. When I went to Havana, I saw the Naticional and Havana show-dancers, with this in mind, which made my trip all the more interesting. The book covers a screen shot in the entire history of Cuba, but certainly gives perspective on why Havana is how it is today-- from the gorgeous buildings, (now run down, but the bones of beauty are still there. One can also argue that there were benefits of Bautista being overrun by Castro, as the mob would have raped Cuba and done nothing for the people as a whole. "Waiting for Snow in Havana" is another good book (also a bit slow to start, as it too gets bogged down) but shows what a terror Fidel was.... The U.S. did not do much to instill confidence in the Cubans that America would not take Cuban's sovereignty for its own.

This is a book that gives credence to the statement 'fact is better than fiction'.A lot of detail is given to the main characters of the story, and very little given to the condition of the people that were the deciding factor in the ending of this part of Cuba's history, the peasants.Having lived at the time of Castro's taking Cuba, I heard my father talk about Castro and Che with deep admiration. I later formed a similar feeling towards these men as facts began to unfold about the conditions of the 'peasants' in Cuba. Mr. English touches on the sexual degradation of the Cuban people that began with Columbus' landing and, although mentioned how the tourist paid $100 for, in his words, "a so-called virgin", what he failed to mention was the tourist, European and white Americans, also paid to have sex with little children. The Cuban's were so poor, it was said that they pimped their babies out for food.Another point that was not mentioned was that 95% of the Cuban people did not receive medical attention, education or proper nourishment at the time that the Casinos were bringing in millions in revenue. Those 5% that did benefit from the Cuban night life are the ones that fled Cuba.The remaining 95% are the ones that to this day shout, "Viva La Castro". A newswoman that visited Cuba stated she could not understand how the Cubans could be so happy because they lived in hovels. She, of course, was ignorant of their condition before Castro.I feel that if these and similar facts had been included, the full impact of the power that Castro has would have been more fully understood.In the 'Epilogue', there is mention of the anti-Castro group waiting for the day they will return to Cuba. That would be interesting. The life they lived no longer exists, not to mention, many of them are senior, senior citizens, but I surmise from the book, that playing on the hatred that the US still harbors towards Castro, they have been catered to in some form or fashion by the political parties.Castro became unpopular and the victim of negative propaganda because he dared to stand up against the United States.If you read this book knowing the full backdrop, I think it will give the information more substance. It will explain how Castro was so successful in overthrowing the corrupt government, ousting the mob, and most of all, why the people of Cuba back him and he is still their hero.

Finally, a book that covers the history of Havana before Castro took over. My dad flew for Pan American Airways back in the 40s and 50s. There were times when he would make 4 to 6 trips a day to Havana. He knew all the major players: The mafia, the gamblers, the celebrities, the CIA operatives, and even a few of Castro's spies. I, myself, a small boy, made many trips with him to Havana. Pan Am always put it crew up to stay at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba. The food there was superb as was the service...and the women beautiful beyond compare. It was an age now lost in time and I shall never forget it.

Drawdown is long overdue. As with all of Hawken's writings it's well conceived, carefully researched and beautifully written. Thank goodness for this effort. Yet....I looked in vain for the evidence that the remedies discussed will materially change the trajectory of projected temperature increases. How much below 2 C will we stabilize at with full implementation of these 100 remedies? According to the book even the most aggressive scenario they model only reduces CO2 by less than one gigaton (out of about 40 gigatons we spew each year) and that isn't until 2045. That means that we're still doomed.I'm also puzzled that the book is called "The most comprehensive plan every proposed to reverse global warming". It's not a plan. It is a painstakingly researched compendium of currently used and and projected remedies. As such it's an essential contribution to our collective knowledge about climate change action. A plan however would have a set of goals, objectives, strategies, indicators and more. Perhaps Paul or others are now working to transform this solid beginning into a real plan. As a long time planner I'd be happy to help.There is also little discussion about the single most important variable affecting whether we retain a livable planet - and that is time - or lack of it. Most all comprehensive analyses conclude that we're essentially out of time to avoid the most existentially dangerous consequences of climate chaos. It's wildly optimistic, and unsupported by the evidence, to suggest, as Drawdown does, that we can reverse climate change even if most of these remedies are not fully implemented until 2050.Unless we almost fully decarbonize and drawdown in a decade or two, we're doomed to 5 -10 degrees F of warming by the end of the century. That level of warming will destabilize our politics, our economy, our food production, our social cohesion and our infrastructure to such an extreme degree that the organized productive work necessary to implement these remedies will be next to impossible to sustain.And even were we by some near miracle to stabilize at the 2 C target we'll have a barely habitable planet, despite the conventional climate wisdom. There's little that is scientific about the 2 C target. It's a convenient political decision that puts the need for urgent action far into the future. We can see the severe consequences on our ice caps, our coral reefs and our weather with only 1 C warming today.There's also the 'moral hazard' risk of the optimistic Drawdown message. We already have too much climate complacency. Yet reading Drawdown suggests that the market and human creativity is enough - or almost enough - to reverse climate change without mass mobilization and radical changes in how we invest, regulate, consume and organize our daily lives.I write this critique with hesitancy given the enormous trust I have in Paul's good intentions and the admirable efforts of his 200 person working group. But we need to do so much more and much faster than what Drawdown describes. So I hope Paul will integrate that perspective into his continuing efforts at showing us the best path forward.

I have spent a couple of hours with this book, read some sections in-depth. I was crazy looking forward to reading it, and it does contain what I think may be new ideas for many people. I am thankful for that.The book has two glaring deficits that make it a work that may ultimately harm our ability to move forward.The first is a striking lack of solutions that are ocean-related. The ocean is the great temperature and atmospheric regulator of our planet. It requires abundant animal life in order to do much of the job of creating oxygen and sequestering carbon--for instance, the trophic cascade driven by whale populations down to plankton numbers. I am no expert, but I cannot imagine that the top 100 solutions do not include numerous actions that should be taken on behalf of ocean health. This is an area that has not received necessary attention and must.This brings me to my second and most troubling point. Most of these solutions are tech based and economically informed. While they seem ambitious and somewhat impossible to attain, what drives much of the carbon emissions of our species is our consumptive way of life. This book assumes, based on solutions presented, that we just have to swap our current technologies with carbon reducing ones and we have some hope of solving things. That is the great lie!! A book with this much hype about solutions did not address overconsumption of manufactured items for its own sake. It does get wrapped into discussion of other topics, such as carpooling and recycling, but not explicitly. Imagine the impact of halving the purchaes we make. Or choosing to live without plastic and unnecessary packaging. We have spent hundreds of years getting into the situation we are in; this critical juncture requires an unswerving look at the nature of our addiction to possessing and extracting, which many of the posited solutions ignore.Already looking for v.2 on this!!!

I teach a climate change course and hoped this book would serve as a guide for students to get them out of the existential crisis which IS climate change I have ordered the book for all my students because it will do just that.It takes some study to get how project drawdown works. It is great to get numbers for billion tons of CO2 reduced (GtCO2 which should be converted GtCeq) plus costs and savings for each of 80 solutions. The numbers are reasonable and it works like crowd sourcing...everybody can pick their solution and work from their own niche.Some of my favorite parts were: 1) the reciprocity essay at the end and the "wood wide web", 2) the trashing of the cultural belief that cattle and trees don't mix, and 3) the dire need to build better batteries so renewables can get beyond 25 per cent of our energy mix.Shortcomings of the book? The graphics and title page seemed a bit odd. And the C capture solution seemed weak, i.e., it is not enough to capture CO2 but we must make it a useful liquid or solid as in limestone bricks. The analysis re family planning and education of girls is SO important but the analysis of this is weak as it means controlling population if we are ever to have Limits to Growth as prophesied in 1972.Bravo to Paul Hawjen and the team for getting us going in the right direction.

This book is pretty much just a brief summary on Alpacas. As others have mentioned almost 1/2 the book is a rather outdated list of websites of breeders of Alpacas in the US. Also it includes a FAQ section which while could have added additional materials for learning instead it posed questions like "What is an alpaca?" and other novice questions which had already been answered in the beginning chapters of the book.I also worry a bit about copyright issues with this book as I've seen almost exact paragraphs in other pamplets and free pdfs on raising alpacas online.

Not nearly enough information for a new owner. There are not enough pictures or illustrations to explain concepts. Read it in one sitting and felt I could have done better just reading articles on the web. Not the resource I had hoped for.

This book has a small amout of very basic information. The author does not own alpacas and does not provide the type information one would desire if looking to raise alpaca. Also poorly written with many grammatical errors. I do not recommend buying this book.

This book is pretty much a scam, it has a small amount of general info, somewhat less than you would find on wikipedia. Then the author manages to stretch it out to book length by simply repeating some of the information in a "Frequently Asked Questions" section, followed by 50 pages of addresses of breeders. Thats almost 1/3 of the book! It also contains a Foreword, and Afterword, a Glossary, list of websites, extensive Table of Contents, Index, etc. Its remarkable how little info this book actually has about how to actually keep alpaca.On the cover it says "Step by Step Guide Book" but there are no steps. I was interested in information about taking care of toe problems, for instance. Well, there is a section called "Feet". Its 4 sentences long. This section is listed in the table of contents and the index, so you will have no trouble finding it. The author indicates that he and some friends invested in a male alpaca at some point, and that he would like to get more involved with actually caring for them some day. That, and looking at the internet seem to be the limit of his knowledge.This book is obviously a money grab. It would have been some use for someone considering taking care of alpaca, before the internet existed. However, this book was published in 2014. Most if not all the positive reviews are fake. Im sorry, this book is a trick.

Grammatical and formatting errors (of which there are many) aside, this book is very technical in nature and reads like a college essay on alpacas. It doesn't answer some basic questions about alpaca keeping, and it provides some information that is not factually correct. I do not recommend buying.

I found this book very informative, and easy to read, and would be a very good tool for anyone interested in raising alpacas; or simply for anyone who wants to learn more about alpacas. It began with their history and origin, then goes into the different types and colors of alpacas, and even their closest “relatives,” so to speak. I learned about the differences between the Huacaya and Suri alpacas; their fleece; how to feed and care for the different types; their body types; adaptability to weather; housing; healthcare; their unique characteristics; what it would cost to become an alpaca farmer, etc. Needless to say, this book was very informative, and would be a good addition to any library.

One of my favorite novels. Always in my top five lists of all time. The novel that I have probably read the most times. Hemingway is what I like to call a "thinking man's author." Unless you are willing to think beyond the written word you will never fully appreciate the brilliance of Mr. Hemingway. In "The Sun Also Rises" and "A Farewell to Arms"(not to mention his great short stories) this concept of thinking beyond the written word is most prevalent and most masterfully displayed. Every single character in "The Sun Also Rises"is a mystery and, after finishing the novel, one is left thinking "I wonder what happened next to that character."Lady Ashley is my favorite female character in all of literature. She is real, uncompromising, and yet a mystery to the very end. She is a siren with a heart or maybe without a heart?Hemingway, unlike such great authors as Lawrence, Proust, Dickens, Tolstoy and Fitzgerald, could describe a scene, a setting, using half the words that these wonderful writers would use and yet be as poignant and vivid as any writer I have ever read. His descriptions of the bull fights at Pamplona and the fiesta are chilling and as splendid as anything I have had the pleasure to read.Tomorrow, July 2, marks the day Hemingway died. He once said, "The only thing a person takes with him when he dies, is what he left behind" and in his case he left behind brilliant novels and masterful short stories that never fail to amaze and astonish me.

With Hemingway it is in the details. I never really understood his stories for the longest time. I always just saw him pointing out everything and saying nothing. Making a story out of the little things that to everyone else mean very little. But Life is about the little details and about the subtle nuances. About the cab, about the stories of the characters before and after and during the novels. That he doesn't limit the novel to the story he is telling is an asset that is overlooked. At any point you can follow a character off into another network of complex and thoughtful stories. The audio book does not give Hemingway the justice his novels deserve. They are drab and boring to the point I was confused how he was a celebrated author, then I realized it was the audiobook and the narrators misunderstanding of Hemingway. Read Hemingway with the persistant question: why are the details and the small things in life a story unto its own. Especially in the context of a man who has seen his friends butchered and who himself has nearly been killed. Life takes on another type of beauty that critics cannot ever know.

If one were taking a course on "The American Novel in the 20th Century", I'm sure Hemingway would be featured prominently. However, for pure reading enjoyment, "The Sun Also Rises" falls flat. We meet a cast of characters that are tedious, scheming and wholly unlikable. We are then presented with a story that is little more than the characters doing a few things in between extended bouts of drinking. This is simply another Hemingway exercise in "manly men", chasing "confused women" during the years between wars. I've never been particularly taken by his celebrated style of sparse writing. For depth of character, give me Steinbeck. For richness of story, Faulkner. And for artful concision, I'll take Vonnegut. Hemingway has, and should have, lost his place among relative American writers of the 20th century.

What more to say about a classic that changed the way we think about the novel and writing and narrative itself? For all its brawl and sharp talk, its drinks and bullfights, notice how some significant scenes occur "off camera," and are related to us only second hand (we never see Cohn beat up Brett's matador lover, we don't see Brett with Cohn when they go off for their love jaunt) but we do learn about it at the same time Jake Barnes - the protagonist - does. Note also that for all of his sexual incapacity (from the war) Jake is able to "pleasure" Brett, if you read carefully. The idea of a hero who is sexually impotent yet in the eye of a sexual storm has its own particular flavor. The tough noir novels that followed and derived from Hemingway (Chandler) owe much to witty repartee and cynical responses to pain and losing the girl. I would almost call this a comic novel if it didn't have darker overtones. Wit and humor are present in nearly every chapter -as if Hemingway wants to tell us something else. As for the hard drinking I am sure some Ph.D. has estimated just how many liters of alcohol flow through the book and how many ccs of alcohol flow through the characters' veins. For those who read this when they were in high school and wondered what the fuss was about, a reread is worth it, keeping in mind how different his writing is to so much of what we read today, the short sentence, the absence of adjectives and adverbs, and the fact that the author almost never enters the minds of his characters but lets the reader infer everything from what is seen and "dialogued." As for the Kindle version, I found no typos or joined words that are sometimes the problem with "kindle'd" books. Much criticism exists on the internet about the "meaning" and the subtext of the book and reading around the text itself does help enrich the experience. That with this writing style, Hemingway shut the door on sentimentality, that his style is hard-boiled, that Hemingway learned from Ezra Pound to "distrust adjectives." In a future book (Death in the Afternoon) he explains his "iceberg" theory of writing: "If a writer of prose knows enough of what he is writing about he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an ice-berg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water. A writer who omits things because he does not know them only makes hollow places in his writing." Keeping things out causes a pressure on what is left in and the reader can sense and "intuit" the rest of the story.

I liked the simplicity of this book. I haven't wrestled now for over 20 years so it helped to refresh my memory on a lot of things to help my son.

Has lots of useful information and it is portable.

My husband coaches youth wrestling and says its an excellent tool to help him with his kids and exercise activities.
