"Tom Clancy spins yet another great action story with unforgettable characters, shootouts, spy intelligence and surveillance, and hacker technology that keeps you engaged from start to finish!"Like most readers that are interested in Clancy, I grew up with his works from the very beginning since the start of The Hunt For Red October, and have read every novel since. Like most die-hard fans, its only natural to compare his earlier works [Patriot Games, Without Remorse] to the new-and-refreshed Clancy that has emerged today in such books as Locked On and the latest Command Authority. There is no doubt that you will find major differences in the works from both generations. Most of the original characters [Jack Ryan Sr., Domingo Chavez, and John Clark] are still hanging on and delivering edge-of-the-seat battles just like in the Rainbow Six days. In this novel, however, after John Clark suffers a serious hand injury after being tortured in the last book [Locked On] he spends most of the story recovering from a broken hand as he slowly ease into retirement. But, as those readers who are familiar with Clark and his thirst for the front lines know all too well, this only lasts so long as he steps up and out towards the final to save "The Campus" from a hostile takeover in Threat Vector. To be honest, I lost a lot of faith in the "new and revised" Tom Clancy series with the introduction of Jack Ryan Jr. in "Teeth Of The Tiger" as this was one of the most disappointing books since Red Rabbit. Several years later, I picked up Dead Or Alive and it had enough to compel me to move ahead with Locked On; After this action-packed thriller, I had to have the next one, especially with the "teaser" at the end of Locked On when we discover that Jack Ryan Junior's new girlfriend Melanie Kraft is actually spying on him. This brings us to Threat Vector. Generally speaking, I'm hesitant when it comes to "big name authors" co-writing/authoring with other writers. But, the last couple books were well-written and showed signs of strong character development with great plot twists and well-written action sequences. Threat Vector was not a disappointment when it came to the action and battle scenes. In fact, it turned out to be the best book in the new series as the reader is drawn into and actually starts to grow concerned for the fate of The Campus. From the get-go the book opens with an action scene as the Campus team [Clark, Chavez, Caruso, Jack Ryan Jr. and Sam Driscoll] set up an ambush to eliminate a target that killed Dominic's brother, Brian in the last novel. The hit is successful, but then the real trouble begins. In a novel filled with edge-of-your-seat action scenes, espionage, betrayal, aerial combat, and real world hacker strategies directed towards committing cyber crimes agains the USA, Threat Vector doesn't disappoint. The book is chock full of interesting information that "educates" the reader in the ways of Cyber Terrorism and how realistic it is as it relates to actual events taking place in the world today. Threat Vector is more than just an action-packed military crime thriller...it is a look into the future of what may happen "IF" certain conditions were to fall into place, and how the super powers that exist today have discovered that Global Warfare in the 21st century has is most destructive when engaged in cyber space. The pacing of this novel is fast and keeps you turning the pages [or swiping to the next digital page]. Here are some highlights of the book's themes:BOOK HIGHLIGHTS* John Clark retires from service after suffering a serious hand injury by torturers...* Jack Ryan Senior is now acting president of the USA...* Jack Ryan Jr. is involved with a young woman that goes to work spying on Jack for what she "thinks" is the FBI...* A club shootout in HONG KONG with the vicious 14K Triads as Chavez and Ryan Jr. attempt to stop a raid by Joint Ops from going horribly wrong...* A Mastermind hacker Zha Shu Hai that goes by the alias Fastbyte22 almost singlehandedly brings The Campus down...* Edge-Of-Your-Seat showdown between China and Taiwan , and China and the USA.* Highly detailed functions of the world of Cyber warfare and Cryptograms...* A RAT payload that uploads itself into a computer system to be used for stealing highly classified information...* A Chinese sub sinks an Indian Destroyer/aircraft carrier that sparks a war......* A secret Chinese institution called CENTER specializing in Cyber warfare and espionage/spying responsible for engaging "The Campus" in a cyber war...* Fourteen-K Triad in HK, most notorious criminals in the underworld play a huge role in controlling the Hong Kong underground, and they learn a valuable lesson in warfare when they have to engage Domingo and his team...* A dirty FBI agent is putting the pressure on Melaine Kraft to coerce her into nailing Jack Ryan Jr. in hopes of catching him doing something illegal...* A young software engineer is framed by Chinese Intelligence to install spy software into the system of the Campus. The young man, to protect his family and reputation complies...* BOOK ENDING: Jet fighters attach China; a downed Pilot is saved by jack Jr, and an elaborate ambush is the grounds for the finale...You will not be disappointed by this book. Although much of the writing I suspect was written by co-author Mark Greaney, it reads like a new and refined Clancy novel. There is even a scene during the aerial combat over China that clearly describes in detail the ejection seat system for an F/A-18 that military buffs may appreciate. I believe the co-author has set a new standard for Clancy books, and with Tom Clancy now passed, will continue to deliver energetic, high-octane military thrillers that continue to thrill and entertain.

THREAT VECTOR is a Tom Clancy novel with Jack Ryan written by Mark Greaney. The fact that it’s a Jack Ryan novel makes the story appealing. The book’s relevance to today’s (2016) real world crises with China and Russia makes it even more enticing. As in most Clancy/Greaney novels the first 20 percent of the book is filled with superfluous and boring background narration. If you can wind your way through this early part you will be rewarded. Most of the action takes place in China and the South China Sea. The book is full of exciting, action-packed scenarios. There’s even a couple of good air-to-air battles thrown in to indulge the flyboys among us. President Ryan and Jack Junior play key roles in these scenarios. It was unsettling to read about China’s threatening actions against its neighbors and then on today’s FOX News I listen to similar reports about China’s and Russia’s intimidating actions currently taking place in the real world. This is reflective of Clancy and Greaney’s writing genius, diligent research and farsightedness. The novel delves into the international world of cyber-warfare. It depicts how scary and destructive cyberkinetic attacks on our power plants and grids can be, as well as a potential wholesale shutdown of our transportation and communication systems. It shows how powerless a country can become when it relies heavily on computer systems and then comes under cyber-warfare attack. America is extremely vulnerable as are all nations in this regard. Threat Vector is reflective of what Americans hunger to read—unapologetic expressions of patriotism with the good guys winning occasionally. Threat Vector is a good read. I give it a 5-star rating.

Potential spoiler alert: So the US intel agency's computer system (as well as many others) is completely compromised by some bad guy nation-state that has ambitions to grow its borders. Things go from bad to worse with cyber attacks all over the place and the US military's ability to respond to open hostilities is basically hobbled by these cyber attacks. A couple key pieces of intel come in sideways, the good guys surgically take out two key players on the bad guy team and suddenly everything just stops and the world goes back to normal. There's lots of side-stories and detail along the way (as with any Clancy novel, which is awesome), and the plot line is really riveting as the width and breadth of the problem gets fully defined. Then, in very few remaining words, a couple surgical operations are undertaken, magically taking out two key bad guys and the next thing you know, things are back to normal and life goes on.The first 85% of the book was everything I'd come to expect from a Clancy/Jack Ryan novel. The last 15% were like a different author was brought in to finish it.Maybe that's how it went down. Maybe TC couldn't finish it so the other author listed had to finish it, but there was absolutely a different, less intricate resolution to the tale versus what I was expecting based on how well it had been developed. The first 4 stars are for the first 80% of the book. The last missing star is for the missing ending that could have been worthy of the first 80%.
