This is a surprisingly good travel book. Finally, Fodor's is going after DK's Top 10 series of books that are not only succinct, but will fit into your pocket for quick reference. I've been to Rome nearly a dozen times over the years, and this book felt like it hit all the important tourist attractions. Naturally, if you're going to plan a trip to Rome/Italy, you'd use a book like this to get a high level overview of the important stuff to see and take photos of, and something else (and online resources) to help you fill in the details. I didn't see any example itineraries, which could have been very helpful for those who don't want to do packaged tours.

Needed this for trip to Rome
Having traveled to Rome earlier without this guide, I think it would have been a great companion for that trip. It is handy and small and gives a great overview of each of the attractions, so you can carry it around. It starts with an intro to Rome and then goes to Top 25 sights to see, then there is a more to see section if you have additional time.Next come city tours around the city, that include shopping and restaurants. It divides the city into sections so you can do one in a day like Vatican area, Northern Rome, Central Rome etc. There is also a following section on Shopping, then Entertainment, Restaurants, Lodging. The guide ends with need to know section that contains practical info like phrases, weather, and transit info. The bus system in Rome was very good and since the taxi drivers were very strict about taking no more than 3-4 people in the taxi, and we were 5, we preferred buses as we were in Central Rome, and occasionally took the train to venture outside of Rome. It wasn't too hard to figure it out. The pull out map in this guide book would have helped a lot too.The pull out map is laminated and comes in a plastic sleeve in the back, it has all the sites in alphabetical order index so you can spot it on the map and plan your daily itinerary. It also has the tram/train map. We took buses as we were usually trying to get around in Central Rome from our home base of Campo di Fiori, and it was the best option. This guide would have been nice to carry around as we made our way through the city. That's why I got it for the next trip.
The world of travel guides is dominated by two giants: classic, illustrated in color, very detailed Baedeker (since 1839), and the more exclusive, profusely illustrated in color, detailed Eyewitness travel guides. The Fodor's retains its originality while nearing both with a slightly closer resemblance to the Baedeker especially considering the map held in a pocket, but the Baedeker is min. better published and handier, has a tiny bit crispier layout and maps/plans, and its plastic wallet cover holding the guide and map may protected in all weather when new and intact.The Fodor's series is - as this ISBN 0147547113 "25 Best 2018 Rome" (****½) - in full color and has improved, vivid maps and plans, and it is detailed comparably to the Baedeker and Eyewitness. It as more illustrations as the Baedeker, but a bit fewer than, and not as good as, the Eyewitness, which is 1/2 inch longer and thus min. less handy, but with excellent flexible vinyl bindings, slightly greater number of pointers, and min. superior layout, graphics, clarity, and - in general - the quality of being a souvenir\memento.By the time of this review, the content of a different Fodor's Rome guide is shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that this 25 Best 2018 Rome has improved and strong cover resembling those of the Eyewitness.
This is by far THE Most Exceptional travel book I've ever seen.It not only includes all the hot spots starting with St Peter's, or Basilica di San Pietro as all the sites and the map is referred to in the Italian vernacular, but there are very detailed sections on tours and eateries and even a need to know section .Of course the details are in English so don't be alarmed but in Rome, a map is not going to say St Peters Basilica.The next amazing part of this book is it is a reasonable hand held-pocket size book, maybe an inch thick but packed with information.The cover almost feels hard sided as the front flap unfolds into a transport guide such as rail lines and walking guides.As well as the map of the top 25 sites the book focuses on.The back flap has a snap style plastic pouch that holds your full size lamented map.While the safe traveler in me knows I would never use this in public, it's a great guide to plan your trip and evaluate at the beginning and end of each day.The other stunning part is the pictures.I've seen St Peters a hundred times on tv during holiday masses.The view on the St Peters page make me truly feel this is a magical place in no way HD TV could imagine.I could go on but really, this book is best experienced in person.It's refreshing to see a condensed version of what you should see without overwhelming on everything you want to see.
