There is a poetic genius in candor of this account. As a former infantryman and combat veteran (and a writer), I can say that of all the war memoirs I have read, none come nearly as close to the full spectrum of infantry combat as Bellavia and Bruning do with House to House. The reasons this book hasn't won major acclaim or been awarded is because it is so singular and unique. It's not written in the tradition of Hemingway-esque novels, and for that I don't think it draws the attention it deserves. If it did receive the attention, I think it would set a new standard for literature, as did In Cold Blood by Capote. House to House almost reads like a screen play, needing no droning paragraphs of descriptive prose to elucidate a situation as do some of the great classics. In a few short, gritty, honest sentences--how someone is eating, the thoughts in his mind--you are pulled closer to his reality than any naturalistic work I have read, be it even McCarthy or Faulkner. It's almost too in your face with it's resounding truth. He forces himself upon you, like a real infantry grunt, and reading it is like wearing virtual reality goggles--scratch that, it's like being inside his actual head. This account should be a classic, illuminating not only his experience, or even that of his war, but of soldiers in all modern wars. He covers literally every moment and thought through a graceful read. And although Bellavia had some help with a veteran writer, Bruning, I can hear Bellavia in every sentence.
This hard-hitting book grabs you from the first pages, and drops you into the world of a US Army infantry NCO squad leader in Iraq. Bellavia's story had me turning page after page, since this book is very hard to stop reading once you start. Gritty, raw, sometimes savage account of what the bloody fighting in Iraq was really like. Whether you feel "War on terror" is ill-conceived or going well or badly, you can't ignore the bravery and sacrifice made by thousands of men and women like David Bellavia and his squad of truly courageous men. In the "Forever Wars" of Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, et. al. books like this tell the true story of what infantry combat in the 21st century is all about. If you want to understand what it is like to fight the battle hardened and drugged up enemies of Al Quaeda, Isis and the lot this book is the next worst thing to actually being there!
Some books deserve the respect of intense reading.....the "no way I'm putting this down" until the are no alternatives or you finally fall asleep at 0400 hours. The short nights were worth it. My guess is they will be for you as well. This goes far deeper than reading a story told by the one who lived it. For each of us this may be different. Regardless, the book is a gift from the deep places within the heart of the writer that can touch deep places within us if we let it. My thanks to David for having the courage to write and the compassion to be compelled by a love far greater than himself.
Every war has it's famous battles. During the War in Iraq, one in particular occurred--the battle of Fallujah. This city was a mixture of citizens and infiltrated insurgencies. Therefore, this entire city needed to be thoroughly and completely cleaned for the citizens of Iraq, if not for the stability of the Middle East and the whole world at large.I've got to say how personal, engaging, alarming and realistic it was for the author, SSG David Bellavia of the U.S.A. Army's Infantry. His role was SSG in charge of hismen as they played a game of urban warfare with the bad guys. So the citizens ofFallujah took flight and the Army came in to remove these bad guys. Yet, there was nothing light-hearted at all when it came to the mission they were there for... housekeeping the insurgency. This was a different style of fighting and after reading this book, I am so very proud of those who represented our country as they risked their lives going into these buildings. No building was cleared until they cleared it.As written by this soldier, this was a unique battle which quickly became very personal as they engaged their enemy in so many of the housing units. This was urban warfare and the only way to get the city back was by clearing out every nock and cranny of every home, behind every closet or under every bed, under every stairway, on every rooftop, and in every courtyard. Outside, they were sitting ducks as everything you could think of was shot at them. That is why I described this battle the way that I did.Hats off to SSG David Bellavia, for all that he had to leave behind here at home, even though being able to withstand homesickness came with a price so well lived. He had a son who could just not cope with dad missing so much of his life. But, the author's life goes on, in a drastic twist and turn of events after his toursof Iraq are over, and as he explains this, it seems fascinating, but in a different way than as he was when an enlisted Army man.God Bless you SSG Bellavia. Thank you very much for your service. You sure faced, ached, fought, lost, but then again, surviving all in ways of your own.Since your life has changed, it is just as interesting and valuable for us readers to know about so thanks for adding it to your book.Great read! I recommend this book highly.
