The boy’s simple narration and the pencil-and-watercolor illustrations make it clear that the superhero status doesn’t come from a fantasy (e.g., flying through the air, X-ray vision) but from the very real actions soldiers perform daily in the course of duty: driving a tank, jumping out of an airplane, and so on. Although there are many picture books available about a parent in the military, what makes this unique is the very basic format, featuring one sentence per double-page spread, and the solemn, uncluttered illustrations clearly portraying the father’s actions. Pair with Hero Mom by Melinda Hardin to expose readers to the amazing feats of both genders in the service of protecting our country. Excellent read aloud for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

What a great, yet simple, way to share the pride and worries children have for their military parent. As a teacher, it is a perfect way to introduce Veteran's Day, especially if it is paired with Hero Mom by the same author. The approach of comparing their military parent with super heros catches the students' attention and keeps it. Super cute!

I bought this to share with my class for Veteran's Day. I also bought Hero Mom. The problem is with this book. It is printed upside down and backwards. Um, quality control, where are you? I took the jacket off, thinking that it was just the jacket put on wrong, but nope, the whole book is printed upside down and backwards.

Absolutely loved these books. We wrote a letter to our daughter on the inside and attached our pictures before we both deployed. Not many books like this for children but glad that this one is around.

This book is well written and the class loved that it was from a child's point of view. Awesome read.

I was looking for a book to read to my 3 year old class for Veterans' Day. This book has great illustrations and does a great job showing how important veterans are without being too wordy. What child would not want their dad compared to a super hero? Great book and very relatable for young children.

Love, love, love this book! I just wish they had one for Marines, too.

I found Brown's honesty about the emphasis on continence in both Roman society and the abiblity to be as such a sign of a true prophet in Christianity to be edifying. I just took Christopher West's Theology of the Body workshop and found many of the truths in this book to be found in John Paul II's writings on the Theology of the Body. The natural weakening of the ability of the sexual act was seen as an ability to turn toward the union with the divine instead of as something that had to be fought off with Viagra! I found it to be a book that will encourage people to the resourcement that the Second Vatican Council has called us to. I was fascinated to see in the Roman Empire how giving birth was a duty just to keep society functioning as the life span was only 25 years old. Love had to be stronger than death or the Roman Empire would have collapsed!Rev. Arnold J. Miller Jr.

First, I suggest a counter to the review which said the book was dense reading. I don't think so (caveat - I have a degree in Theology, so I read this stuff all the time). Brown's presentation is more lucid than many writers of similar works in technical journals, and he is a world class expert on "Late Antiquity", a subject he virtually invented. He is also the author of the best biography of St. Augustine (short of reading the "Confessions").I also suspect the reviewer's claim that the Christians took on the ascetic ethic of the Stoics. The only reference to the Stoics of any substance is their influence on Clement of Alexandria, who was not a major advocate of asceticism and against concupiscence. Asceticism grew on the fringes of the empire, in the Syrian and Egyptian deserts. The emphasis on abstinence from all sex except for procreation for the general faithful was stressed most strongly by St. Augustine in several books, and argued strongly against heretics who discounted "original sin".I have two main comments which scholars may find useful. The first is that it deals primarily with Latin Christendom, and with very little attention given to the Greeks (Origin, the Cappadocians, and John Chrysostom) of Egypt and Anatolia, for example. The second is that it tends to see things from a very broad perspective, giving lots of background. This has the advantage of pulling in a lot of names and places who are important to someone studying the subject. I heard, for the first time, of the major Pelagian heretic, Julian of Eclanum.It is this broadness which makes the book appealing to the non-scholar. It is important to remember that the subject is both "the body" and "society". That's a big canvas to fill. But, if all you want is ancient views on "the body", you may need to wade through a lot of ancient history. But, for school work, the footnotes and the bibliography are worth the price of admission.

Peter Brown is awesome. Great writing, clear arguments, and excellent elucidation of the issues. This book was eye-opening for me, and I highly recommend it.

For a scholarly work this is a surprisingly good read about some strange twists in the history of western ideas.

The book came on time in great condition. I bought it for my religious studies class called "Varieties of Christianity". This book is dry and can be a bit long, but I actually learn a lot about early Christianity from this book! If you have the motivation and interest in learning about early Christianity, this is a great book to go!

This is a very important book. It shows, by quoting early Christian writers, how the Church, through adopting the moral stance of the Stoics, a stance that looked very high, but was a rejection of our materiality, came to a negative view of our sexuality, a view it has not yet quite expurgated.

The book was pretty dry and the authors writing style made it difficult to understand his sentences. I was constantly looking up words. However, the book was really educational, and reading it felt like back thru time.The author really gives us a good understanding of the early ascetic views of distorted sexuality.

This book was not good at all. It does NOT show how to get grade rules nor how to set up a chart nor explain different charts and how to construct them. This book IS NOT for beginners. It gives a general overview of manual grading. I didn't read the computer portion of grading because if the manual portion isn't good then the computer sections I'm not going to read. I was forced to give the book 1 star. New beginners or wanting to rejuvenate your knowledge of grading .....this is NOT the book for you!

Great book if you need to learn to grade a pattern - Glad I purchased it.

I have read this book several times now.. I have some background in SERE.. I graduated in Class 72-01 Air Force SERE.. I also attended all of the Air Force Survival Schools , Arctic, Tropic, Desert, and Jungle. I attended the Army Special Forces SERE School. I have taught SERE in Washington State, Florida, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Jordan. This is a complete well thought out book, that thinks with you as you read.. He anticipates your questions and answers the "experts advice" that he sees as incomplete or in error.. There is no one way to Survive at a Grid Down scenario. Each of you will have to tailor your resources with your belief systems. It will be the most difficult thing you will ever have to do.. This book is a great resource. It clearly defines the threat. It lists resources that you may have or that you can obtain. It constantly reminds you that Wal Mart will be closed and those things you need you will either have or will improvise or go without. When it happens, what do I do? Where do I go? What do I need to live with my family and those in my group? Are groups even a good idea? Can we pool our resources and survive? How much food do I need? Should I buy food storage? It is thought provoking and will have you purchasing more books, and guides.. My experiences in East Africa in the early 80's gave me a harsh look at civil war. You have no idea what starving people will do and how hard it is to say "NO". This book is a must for each library, and is a good read for wives and children. Read it with your family and discuss the options for your family..Now the question for you is; "Can I do what I think I can do"?Ron LongUSAF SERE Class 72-01

The author is a former SERE instructor, and obviously knows his stuff. This book is based on the author's view that a EMP event, similar to the fictional event portrayed in William Forstchen's best seller "One Second After" and discussed at length in Ted Kopple's non-fiction book "Lights Out," as the most likely SHTF scenario that could bring about massive and disruptive change to our personal and national lives if it should ever happen. What Mssrs. Forstchen's book and Kopple's book were short on were specifics, like how to prepare for a possible EMP event happening. What gear do you need, what skills should you practice, where should you go, etc. They did a good job of realistically explaining what an EMP could do, but they pretty much left it at that. Hollerman's book fills the gap nicely, and he gets very, very specific. He doesn't claim to have all the answers, or even that his views will apply to most people, but he doesn't shy away from sticking his own neck out and stating his personal opinions which I like and respect. For instance, he bluntly says that his choice for personal sidearm in a grid down scenario would be a Glock. Period. No waffling. Now, I'm an HK fanboy (HK45C to be specific), it's just the platform I'm comfortable with. But I like the fact that he states his preference, and why he chooses it, and why you probably should as well. He encourages people to think about their own circumstances and apply this book as appropriate to their own lives without totally reinventing the wheel. One thing I wish the author or publisher had taken the time to include would be an index, thus I took away one star. Any guide or manual with this much extensive information really needs a searchable index. Maybe in a future edition? Also, future editions would benefit from chapter summaries as well, so that people can quickly access or remember key points since the writing is so dense with information. This doesn't take away from the quality of the book, or the information, but it would make it much more handy. Otherwise you're pretty much stuck with highlighting the crap out of the book (which I'm doing) and sticking little tabs on the pages. Otherwise a solid choice for people looking to be prepared... for whatever happens.

I have read so many of these preparedness books (including many highly rated ones) that were a complete waste of my time, I couldn’t even tell you. I’m sure many of you have too. 99% of these genre of books are spitting out the same regurgitated information over and over again. It’s an embarrassment. They might as well just copy and paste each other’s pages to each other (maybe they do).Jonathan Hollerman’s book Survival Theory is a breath of fresh air, among a field of mostly arm-chair commandos. You can tell from reading him, that he is the real deal. He doesn’t just talk about it. He didn’t just read about it from other “preppers”. He studies it, does it and has experienced it (well, much of it anyway...hopefully we’ll never find out). This is finally a survival book worth highlighting! The greatest part about him, is he uses real common sense to understand or theorize events or outcomes...along with a ton of study behind it. So many books, blogs, and comments I’ve read...amazingly, don’t. He has done his research, and it shows. I’ve been through multiple hurricanes. I’m CERT certified (twice). I hold 5 FEMA IS certificates. I’ve been activated at our EOC during Hurricane Irma, working alongside Fire, EMS, Police, EM and city officials. I’ve been without power for days. I’ve experienced and have been trained a little bit.Here’s an example of what many don’t realize and you won’t hear it mentioned in most other books (except Jonathan’s). If you are connected to city sewer (a whole-lot of us are) and the power is out city-wide...those pumps that keep that sewage moving and processing at the wastewater plant, aren’t working. The sewage starts building up in the pipes (because people are still flushing with pool water, lake water...whatever they can) and eventually after pipes clogs enough, it starts backing up into properties and homes. I have seen this happen to people during Irma in as little as a week due to compounding issues. Sections of town were not able to use their toilets and had to go to other areas to do their business. So, the books out there saying everything will be fine when the grid goes down in surburbia, as long as you’ve stockpiled enough food, made friends with your neighbors, lay low, have enough ammo for unruly people, and hunker down in your home...are clueless. They don’t understand the big picture. They haven’t truly researched all angles of these scenarios. Sewage backing up into your property WILL make your home uninhabitable. Then what?Overall, Jonathan’s book does paint quite a bleak picture because he’s mainly talking about the worst case scenario...grid down. I applaud him for taking on such an immense and complicated subject. It is not easy, and most “authors” just merely skim through it. He does not. Is it a realistic thing for Mr. and Mrs. Jones to worry about? Worry every day? No. Be somewhat mentally and physically prepared for? Absolutely yes. There is information out there, if you’re willing to hear it, about how the US has malware implanted into other countries to be able to shut their grid down, if they “needed to”. There are countries that also have malware implanted in the US, with those same capabilities, for if and when they “need to”. This particular country has already proven their capabilities by cyber-attacking multiple US large banks (like Wells Fargo) to “test” the waters not too long ago. Is a grid attack on us likely to occur? I sure hope not. But...it is certainly possible and they are quite capable.Thank you Jonathan! I am only halfway way through it and I’ve already learned a ton.

My daughter is 12 and in the sixth grade. She has fallen in love with the Boarding School Mysteries series. She read the first book that we purchased from a local book store and proceeded to beg me to buy the rest of the series. The moment we opened the package from the amazon vendor she grabbed her books and ran to her room to read. She had the next book read within a day and she is raving about them to me and her friends. Bravo Ms. Holl, this school teacher is thrilled to see young people excited about reading, you have a new fan in my daughter and myself.

I love all the Boarding School Mysteries!I like especially how the story always begins with something dramatic!!! I've just started reading burned and I'm liking it already! Vanished and Betrayed were good too!Vanished is the 1st bookBetrayed is the 2nd bookBurned is the 3rd bookPoisoned is the 4thSo far the books I read were Awesome!!! :)

BURNED was a great book. BURNED wasn't as good as the first book though. I look forward to reading poisoned I think it will be better than burned.

Tim Norton is a special needs boy who works at Landmark School for Girls part time. He is outside the biology lab when an explosion happens! However when Tim brings Jeri a present, Jeri finds herself embarrassed and the subject of the other girls' jokes. What will she say when Tim asks her to be his partner at the Luau celebration later that week? Another question going through Jeri's head is whether Tim is the one setting the fires? Will Jeri find out before more folks get hurt?Written for tween girls this series is relevant for both boys and girls as we see how Dallas reacts to some of the happenings. Christian based it is not over the top but definitely gets the message across. Burned is the third book in the series with the books progressing through the school year. Book One, Vanished, started in the winter and we are now in April. A great series to reinforce the correct/best way to live and act towards others. Recommended! I purchased this book in the set of 4.
