It's an okay read if you are just learning about Norse and Germanic traditions, in that case I'd say it's a good place for you to start...I am still seeking a deeper book about Norse traditions, mystery, and magick and it seems as though most books I find, contain similar information - nothing spectacular, nothing really exciting here. In fact, I didn't find anything new here at all. I did like the book, but it didn't give me anything that I hadn't already learned or read from other books.If you are "new" to this old path, then this book may serve you well. If you are not new to the path, it is just redundant, not the author's fault though! I'd say this is a beginners book...
I am really enjoying reading this book not just a cursory and superficial overview of the literal translation of each rune leter and its meaning but meaninful observations on a deeper level seamlessly woven with lore and spritual observation from the persective of a modern day volva I have several books on the subject and so far this is my favorite as it interpretation includes insights from a gentler perspective not just historical but metaphorical and allegorical representation makes you ponder the deeper well of intuitive wisdom
This is the first book I bought on the runes, and though I have bought many since, I find myself referring to it often. Of several experts that I enjoy, her interpretations of the individual runes resonate the most to my own intuition and understanding. She shares a lifetime of dedicated seeking, spiritual and practical, rather than a dry scholastic study. In that regard, she is passionately subjective on her topic, and relies on her personal experience rather than objective citations. For the reader who is exploring the mysteries themselves, I think this is far more relevant than an academic study.My one warning is that she does have anger that carries itself into her writing. Understandable, given her history, but uncomfortable at times.
Freya Aswynn is the most advanced, knowledgable & and skilled expert practitioner at the top of her field in the Northern Tradition and Runes way of life. This is your best option for authenticity in my opinion. I did my research. Also she has an enjoyable style of writing, where you feel engaged in conversation or in person.
I've heard that Freya Aswynn books should never be passed by; this is no exception. I haven't finished the book yet, but I've already acquired far more than I paid for the ink and pages. I am so grateful for the personality of this book, the way the author reaches into her soul and delivers her experience and wisdom. I'm impressed with her knowledgeable perspective and highly recommend this book for all spiritual warriors working with runes! I have especially appreciated how well she explains how various runes work with each other magickally.
I love this author and her particular experiential take on the runes, not just going by what every book (which contradicts onoe another normally) says. She gives practical examples of reading, and very in depth detail as to the runes and the Gods and Goddesses on the North, and does very well at tying in information pertaining to other Gods who may or may not be expressions of another. She fascinates me, and I have her accompanying cd, and her voice is intriguing.
Because the Runes are personal and open to interpretation that way, I found one interpretation in the magick area that did not exactly work for me. But that is the way of the Runes and my own variation in interpretation is still in the same family as hers. She's a very learned person and I felt honors the Runes in a little more than other books I've read. You can feel that she's worked with them a long time both in divination and magick.
I had this book, and lost it. I reordered it, because it is a good reference. The author gets long-winded, and is not very specific in the use of the runes. I read the stories at times, but I use other, more concise, books to study the meaning. Still, this is a classic of sorts.
