About the Author

Matt Carter serves as the Pastor of Preaching and Vision at the Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas, which has grown from a core team of fifteen to more than eight-thousand attending each Sunday since he planted it in 2002. Matt has co-authored multiple books including a commentary on the Gospel of John in The Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series and two group studies, Creation Unraveled and Creation Restored, which traced the gospel message through the book of Genesis. He holds an M.Div. from Southwestern Seminary and a Doctorate in Expositional Preaching from Southeastern Seminary. He and his wife Jennifer have been married for more than twenty years, and they have three children, John Daniel, Annie, and Samuel.Aaron Ivey is the Pastor of Worship at The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas, where he pastors a team of three hundred worship leaders, artists, storytellers, and musicians. Aaron has written and produced ten worship albums, and has written hundreds of congregational worship songs that are sung all over the world. His songwriting includes works represented in Worship Together, Jesus Culture, Capital Music Group, Doxology & Theology, and Austin Stone Worship. He was a best-selling author and recognized by thousands. Thomas Johnson was a simple slave boy who was unjustly shackled in colonial America. He was known by few and treated like an animal. His slave master worked him to the bone on the Virginia tobacco fields.Jesus Christ liberated Thomas Johnson. He freed him from the power and the penalty of sin. President Abraham Lincoln rescued Thomas Johnson from the sin of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln regarded as the crowning achievement of his presidency, liberated Thomas from his slave master. Jesus Christ liberated Thomas from the slave master of sin.Through a series of Providential events, Thomas Johnson found himself at the front door of C.H. Spurgeon in London. It's been a long time since a book made me weep as I did in the final pages of Steal Away Home. There is so much beauty in this story, in the writing of it, and—most of all—in the Gospel which saturates it, that there really was no other way to respond but through tears of joy for God's victory over sin and death, mingled with tears of sorrow for the brokenness which still mars our world until Christ returns to consummate that victory.I have read a lot of books by and about Charles Haddon Spurgeon. But I can truthfully say I've never encountered anything like this book, both in its scope and style.The book's authors, Matt Carter & Aaron Ivey, are two of the elders at The Austin Stone Community Church, a church whose ministry has often encouraged and inspired me. While visiting the Stone last May for what they call a Worship Pastor Intensive, Aaron shared with us about how co-writing this book had been such a blessing in his life; I pre-ordered it on the spot.While the book is somewhat biographical, its genre is difficult to identify due to its unique nature. In the introduction, Carter states that the book's style was inspired by Michael Shaara's excellent book The Killer Angels, a novelized story of the Civil War focusing on the lives of several historical figures. Steal Away Home is written as a novel in which the main characters are the 19th century preachers Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson.If you're like me, you're reading that second name and saying, "Who?"The fact that Johnson's name is relatively unknown is a real tragedy! His story is truly fascinating, and the impact he had on the Kingdom of God is immense, both as a missionary to Cameroon and as a much-needed encourager and friend to the "prince of preachers."Thomas Johnson had been a slave for 28 years in Virginia when the end of the Civil War brought about his emancipation. Though he had heard the name "Charles Haddon Spurgeon" (when he was forced to accompany his master and a Baptist preacher to a book burning in which the works of Spurgeon—an outspoken abolitionist who openly challenged slave-holding "Christians" in the American South—were read to slaves before being thrown into the fire), he never dreamed he would have the opportunity to meet with him, much less become his friend.Providentially, God allowed Johnson to be sponsored to attend Spurgeon's Pastor's College in London, to be trained and commissioned as a missionary to Africa. During his time in London, and for decades later, Johnson became one of Spurgeon's closest friends and confidants. Spurgeon's lifelong struggle with depression and physical ailments are well known. But the way Johnson spoke truth into Spurgeon's life, teaching him about true freedom in Christ, has remained mostly obscured from history until now. I'm so grateful to Carter & Ivey for telling his story!While the narrative and much of the dialogue for this book required some "artistic license" from the authors, as often as possible the words and "voice" of the characters come from their own writing, primarily their frequent correspondence (Spurgeon kept all of Johnson's letters in the desk in his study), and from Johnson's own autobiography, Twenty-Eight Years a Slave or the Story of My Life in Three Continents (Classic Reprint). The book was thoroughly researched at the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the fact that so many prominent Spurgeon scholars have endorsed the book lends a lot of credibility to the historicity of the story.I can't imagine more capable hands for the telling of this story than Carter and Ivey. I know of no other ministry so invested in story-telling as Austin Stone (learning more about their Story Team is one of the main reasons I attended the Intensive in the Spring). The story is beautifully told, and I wholeheartedly commend it to you.

Carter and Ivey, in Shaara like fashion, provide a glimpse into the lives of Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson. Reading this book was both enjoyable and inspiring. This genre is unique in that it's informed by history and detailed by the authors. The writing and the themes contained are easy to read, see, and be encouraged by. The story itself is masterful. This was a book that I would have welcomed dozens of more pages. The authors did the research and kindly provide readers with a heartfelt tale of friendship, God's sovereignty, and redemption. I'll be certain to pass this along to friends and family alike.

I had this book on my wish list as a "just in case" book. I was surprised when I received it from my wife for Christmas. Since we celebrated early this year I decided to bring it along on our Christmas babysitting vacation (grandkids). While it seemed a bit slow to begin with it soon turned into a compelling story revealing a side of CHS rarely seen. This book helped me to see that while Spurgeon was a great man, he was only a man. It turned him into a human being. The interaction between Thomas Johnson and Spurgeon was second only to David and Jonathan! I do not read very fast and was pleasantly surprised to finish this book well before Christmas (even between diaper changes, etc). The account of the Jubilees of Spurgeon's birthday and Johnson's emancipation was so moving that I found myself weeping at the end of the chapter. I realize this is a somewhat fictional account but I am sure there was adequate research to qualify this as high quality biographical "fiction". This book has given me a greater comprehension of slavery in the South and a deeper appreciation for my own life and relationship with my wife.freed-indeed.blogspot.com

After all the good reviews, I'm sorry to have to bring the mood down. I just didn't like this book. There are some good things, mainly the spiral binding and some of the photos. What I didn't like about it was the fact that the soaps she shows as examples are just plain ugly, I'm sorry, but they are. I can't see how they would inspire anyone. The other thing that turned me off was the advice to leave your soap making utensils for 24 hours before cleaning them....WHAT? If you leave your gloves on you can just wash the soap off your tools and then put them in the dishwasher. If you want a good, basic book about soap making then pass this one by and get Anne Watson's Smart Soapmaking. Mind you it isn't a spiral format, and there are not any pretty color photos, but it is by far a much better book than this one. I've been making soap for a while, and honestly if I had picked this book up first, I would never have started.....check this book out firstSmart Soapmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Traditional Handmade Soap Quickly, Safely, and Reliably, or How to Make Luxurious Handcrafted Soaps for Family, Friends, and Yourself

Being new to soap making I purchased three (3) books, Milk Soapmaking by Anne L. Watson, Soap Crafting By Anne-Marie Faiola, The Soap Queen and Basic Soap Making edited by Letcavage. I have reviewed the three and find that each of them has good information to offer. If you are looking for an easy to follow soap making book that is great for a beginner like myself I would recommend both Basic Soap Making –Letcavage and Soap Crafting by The Soap Queen as they have easy to follow instructions as well as pictures to follow along. The Basic Soap making book offers more explanation on types of oils and smells to showing you some common items that can be used to make soap. The Soap Crafting book provides easy to follow recipes as well as easy to follow instruction and explanations. I love not only the MANY recipes in this book but also the explanation on techniques used to get different designs in soap. In my opinion, these books complement each other very well or could be purchased separately. The Milk Soapmaking book is perfect for milk soap recipes as well as explanations; it is a straight read only book so if you’re looking for a picture explanation you will not get it. She does an excellent job of describing what texture you should look for however, if you like an example this book may be best as an accompaniment to one or both of the other books and not as a sole source.

I'm new to soap making and I bought this as well as another book. I love the pictures. I also love the step by step instructions for adding oatmeal, colors and fragrances. Very helpful. It also has a good list in the back of characteristics in soap of different oils/butters. It also contains a helfpul SAP index and instructions for making your own soap.Cons: Each receipe calls for a different size soap box. I made soap boxes at home last weekend out of wood for the first basic soap receipe, but the next receipe calls for a larger box. The next recipe for an even larger box. That's annoying, I don't want a hobby of making soap boxes. I want a hobby of making soap!Also - for some reason none of the recipes suggested use butters, only oils. I'm not sure if that is so readers don't have to buy a ton of different ingredients or just to keep it simple.Overall, its a keeper and I'm glad I have it to refer to. But I've quickly realized that I need to learn to make my own receipes.

I LOVED this book. It's practically all pictures, and the spiral binding allows it to lie flat. Sure, there are tons of soap-making books, but this one wins for simplicity. While other books overwhelmed me with information and calculations, this one walked me through and let me believe that I could actually do this myself and not blow myself up.Don't get me wrong- I am not saying the details are unimportant. I'm just saying that most adults learn by layering information. They need the basic skeleton....once they have that down, they are comfortable filling in the nooks and crannies with the details. This book is that skeleton and is exactly what I was looking for to get me started.As for the projects and looks of the soap...they might not be the prettiest ones, but that's what MY imagination is for! I just needed some solid footing to get started.

I wanted to have an assortment of references on cold process soap making, so after reading many, many reviews, I finally picked out 5 or 6 books and this is one of them. I have read it, basically cover to cover, and like having this author's instructions, recipes, recommendations, etc. to go along with the other books I purchased. Now, I just need to have the time to actually make cold process soap. With gardening, canning, and outside work still demanding, I will start my new adventure with cold process soap making once our weather changes; allowing me to work some hours indoors instead of outdoors. I am excited and eager to make some soap, hoping to make different types of soaps for different applications. I don't thing that a minute of soap making will feel like work either, as I think I am going to love the process and will add this to my winter activities. I would recommend this book to any beginner soap maker and I plan to start with a basic cold process recipe, as the author suggests to learn the techniques.

My go-to cold process soap making Bible. I made the "beginners" batch and used my soap for the first time this week. It is the best soap I have ever used. I added a Tablespoon of lavender essential oil and it is perfect. Wonderful, healthy lather without the horrible sodium laurate sulfate. Great book!

As someone who is just learning to make soap, this book is great. Step-by-step pictures, and very detailed explanations. Having it laid out, right there in front of you, makes the whole process less intimidating. A few basic recipes are included. This book series will last your child for years. It not only has the story presented in a way that your little one will love for you to read it to them over and over again, it also has a section in the back that is more of a complete historic story for you and your little one as they get a bit older.

There were no replicas of her paintings or flowers that inspired her art. I found a painting of hers and copied it off on my computer in Black and White so that my granddaughter would know what her art looks like and she can color it herself.

New in the Little People, Big Dreams series, discover the incredible life of Georgia O'Keeffe. The text and illustrations show Georgia as a child standing apart from her six siblings in childhood, not running and playing, but observing the beauty of nature. The author, Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s makes the point that one of O’Keeffe’s objectives as an artist was to make people notice the little things that they might be too busy to notice otherwise. This is a child friendly biography that shows a young woman striving to achieve her dream. My biggest disappointment was that none of her artwork was shown or depicted in the book, not even at the back as an appendix. I did however, immediately go online and find websites containing many of her beautiful works of art. This book could be used to teach young children how to write a biography, show that it is important to have a dream and strive to achieve it as well as to introduce this artist and her works, imparting just enough information to get someone curious to investigate further. A good book for a school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via netgalley.

Georgia O’Keefe is not someone I knew before reading this cute little book. It was a fun way to realize who she was. At a very young age, Georgia was inspired to draw not what she saw but what she felt. She found beauty in simplicity. She also found beauty in various places and cities, from Mexico to New York.This story encourages young children to follow their passions and find their own path on their adventure through life. This is an excellent book to give a brief overview of a successful female artist to interest a child. The illustrations of O'Keeffe's life are really fun and it gives a good summary without going into too much detail. It is a great way to introduce O'Keeffe's life too a child and short enough to keep them interested.What I did find a little disappointing was that there were no pictures of O'Keeffe's work. About the Author

Ben Rosander first became interested in bus conversions about 1967 when his soon-to-be father-in-law converted an old school bus to move his family to Arkansas. In 1972, Ben found a classified ad in Popular Science Magazine offering a conversion booklet. He bought the book and with his wife, Robin, converted his first bus-a 1962 GMC sKOOLie. New to the conversion process, Ben blindly followed the advice given, trusting on the expertise of others which, he says, turned out to be a big mistake. Over the years, he reflected on his experience with the notion that he could write a better book. In 2002 Ben completed the 100-page "Select and Convert Your Bus into a Motorhome on a Shoestring", followed by "Dreams on Wheels: Modern Do-it-Yourself Gypsies" and "Bus Conversion Floor Plans". His writings have appeared in Bus Conversions Magazine and he is a frequent contributor to numerous bus conversion bulletin boards. Ben and Robin Rosander reside in Washington State and are the parents of six children.

This book is exactly what you need if you are trying to decide if you are up to task of converting a school bus to live in. Just enough info to help you decide yes or no. It is not too technical. I don't think that's the purpose. I is a great starting point.

This book does not provide you with enough info to be successful. Better to watch you tube videos.

While the information is good the pictures could have been in color. Also the information is a bit dated considering the date the book was published. However enough information available to make decisions. There are very few books on this subject so you have to go with what's available.

Informative, but more of a history/overview/primer than a nuts-and-bolts how-to.

Interesting book, though sad to say, more of 'look what we did' type of book rather than a 'how-to'....but what others have done can give you lots of interesting ideas!

It's old and the photos are a little grainy. But, I like it. It will give you many ideas on how to convert your bus.

Didn't realize before buying the pictures were in black and white instead of color. Also the picture quality is very grainy and over all bad. The information is good though.

For over 30 years I have been buying the Victoriana calendar for my Mother and myself. Now Mama is gone, but every year I still buy one. They are beautiful and useful and a special link to a loved one. This years addition did not disappoint. I always look forward to getting it delivered and looking at the different months and finding the extra goodies inside! I loved January and December especially. March was a nice surprise. A little different style wise but still very cute. And the colors very vibrant. February is unique and romantic. As with all calendars, there are months I like better than others. I would have preferred October to be more seasonally festive. But I enjoy the calendar enough to not stop buying because of one disappointing month. I respect Mrs.Hart’s beliefs, if that is the issue here. I still give Victoriana calendar 5 stars, because how could I not with all the lovely extras! First, I think it is quite clever and resourceful to use the cardboard insert that all calendars use to prevent bending to make a large fold-out calendar. I usually give this as a gift. Next, 4 large postcards on sturdy paper. 2 designs suitable for Valentine’s Day, one for Christmas and a kind of random one I won’t use as it has to do with Scrapbooking but others might. Those usually come every year. But in honor of the 30th Anniversary there is also included a large page of stickers! A nice surprise to find when you open your calendar. Several are quite large, and they are fun and adorable and I look forward to using them! Very happy I purchased.

I love everything about this calendar! It's big, the pictures are just stunning and it's a beautiful decoration for every month. It also comes with a large sheet Victorian stickers 4 beautiful oversized postcards and a standup smaller calendar! All comes in a lovely Victorian decorated folder envelope. Never had such a nice Calendar, pretty pretty pretty!

I’ve loved these calendars literally for decades now. Finding it again is like reuniting with a long lost friend. When my daughter came to visit recently she commented on how much she likes it, too. Comes with a sheet of lovely Victoriana stickers, a stand-up desk or table calendar of decent size and heft, and a few postcards admittedly too flimsy to survive the mail, but lovely in a frame on the wall or tucked into someone’s lunch or vehicle as a surprise to make them smile. It IS an extra bonus, after all!

I have been purchasing this calendar for at least 18 years, but the last few years I’ve been disappointed with some of the choices for October, March, and November. I like the old Halloween for October, clovers for March, etc.

I purchase this calendar every year. It is so beautiful and comes with the little "extras". It's exactly as described on Amazon, only prettier. There's a lot of info about Victoriana in the body of the calendar.

This Calendar is Absolutely Gorgeous...!!! It's so Pretty that I'm trying to find the perfect spot to hang it where everyone can see it...!!! Also love the bonus gifts....!!!!!
