I bought another travel book about Ireland and it was ok but when I got his book, I couldn’t stop pouring over it! Great info for someone who has little knowledge of what to see and do. I had made a list of what I thought we would like to see and Rick made it easy for me to incorporate it into a travel plan based on his advice! Excellent book and I’ll take it with me when we visit Ireland! Can’t wait!

It's not a European adventure without a hardcopy of Rick Steves in your backpack. His books are like bringing your dad on vacation - if your dad had really good advice and knew how to give free walking tours.

Excellent resource book in planning a trip to Ireland. User friendly.

The thought i paid almost 20 bucks for a travel guide with all black and white photos, especially when the scenery is Ireland? I am sure the information is relevant and helpful but it was sadly disappointing. I know color is expensive but at least one or two throughout the book would of been a show of good effort.

Rick Steves travel guides never fail to help you save money when you are traveling. Suggestions have saved us money and time on past trips to Ireland. I expect the same with this one.

This guide is organized in a very logical manner, making it easy to find specific areas you are looking for. The information offers suggestions for all budgets, as well as where to find the best entertainment. Definitely my go-to for all travel, this book will go with me in my journey.

There is no information or even mention of Limerick, and the only mention of Cork is that it is the major city in Southern Ireland and 5 miles from the Blarney Stone! We are going on a concert tour this summer that includes overnight stays at these 2 cities and need to know detailed info about each. Sending this book back.

The illustrations are magnificent! Students love to identify the different kinds of birds and nests in this book. Highly motivating and interesting!

My great-niece loves birds and I know she will love this book. Factual and colorful, just what I was hoping for.

I loved seeing all the woodpeckers in the tree. Loved learning about the different kinds of nests. I also like learning all the names of the birds.

So far I've tried the Hazelnut Dacquoise Cake, Coffee Genoise, and the Summertime Strawberry Cake. Mr. Mesnier layers recipe over recipe, which has actually enabled me to be more versatile. The hazelnut meringue cake layers can be made in smaller sizes for the best tasting cookies you've ever eaten, and you can stuff them with the sinfully delicious freezable chocolate mousse (the best I've ever had) and serve as "ice cream" sandwiches. The pastry cream for the Strawberry cake (without Grand Marnier)is perfect for eclair filling. Great instruction on how to make ganache and how to temper chocolate. I do have two suggestions for any who attempt many of the cakes in this book- there is A LOT of folding of ingredients. Do yourself a favor and buy a large folding spatula, and! try freezing your egg whites the day before and defrosting them to room temperature when ready to make your cake. A proper spatula and this nifty freezing trick will keep your batters or meringues from deflating. And I'm pretty sure that you'll want to have use of a stand mixer, bc some of these (cake) recipes will not be easy w/o it. Mr. Mesnier gives you a list of supplies at the beginning of the book, too. Everything I've made from this book has been exceptional.Update: I thought I'd note for the vanilla custard sauce that goes into the hazelnut dacquoise cake- Messnier says that egg must be cooked up to 160 degrees to reach the safe zone, but I have found that in order for this sauce to thicken, it must reach about 180 degrees. Also, for the Summertime Strawberry Cake- do not try and fold the flour mix into the egg mixture while it's in the stand mixer bowl AND the flour should be added slowly (I sift small amounts at a time) and fold. Kind of tricky :)

I am a good cook but I am not a good baker. I learned about baking technique in this book and I appreciated how Mr. Mesnier took the time to explain why he chose which cake for a particular occasion. He also describes a cake and progresses through three versions of a similar recipe from simple to spectacular so you can vary it as your expertise grows. Lovely addition to my baking library. I have not used any recipes in this book but I plan too as he did not list too many recipes with obscure ingredients or complicated recipes. Many of these cakes seem possible for the novice baker. Also, as a White House Buff I appreciated the narrative of Roland Mesnier.

What good is Beautiful Cakes without the pictures? I cannot believe you would leave out what for me is the most important part.

I am a pretty good baker, but had never thought I could tackle more advanced techniques such as genoise with soaking syrups and different kinds of meringues. This book took the fear out of it, and with the tips and superb step-by-step directions, I was quite successful my first tries! One of the best things about this book is the freedom to take the basics and add your own twist, just as Chef Mesnier has demonstrated by starting with the same cake recipes but dressed up or down to fit the occasion. There are also other types of pastry (i.e., brioche "peaches") that are examined in this book as well as just cakes.

Absolutely wonderful book. I've often wondered of the differences and similarities in both the Buddha and Jesus and this is a fabulous book that goes into great detail about both. I love how open Thich Nhat Hanh is in his writing. As someone who has been following the Buddhist path, I found this to be inspirational and an overall enlightening read.

Inspiring book that merges Buddhism with Christianity. Covers the similarities and differences, but most importantly the deeper, universal meaning of both practices. It also provides how to practice and apply these teachings in everyday life. True wisdom in this book. Thank you for bringing this into the world!

Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most important spiritual writers today.He continues to explore and show the many many reasons that Christians and Buddhists ( and many other spiritual traditions) can and should work together, study together, and work for social change and justice .. together.I really enjoyed learning Thich Nhat Hanh knew and worked for Peace along side with Jesuit Dan Berrigan as early as 1968.In today's troubled world, he offers a vision of hope... and of a path to follow to seek and promote peace.20 plus years later , and even more timely and compelling.

I was very curious to learn about the comparison in theology and understand different perspectives. I feel my questions were acknowledged and I gained insight. Perhaps some wisdom as well. I have now read several books by this author and enjoyed each one. This was a good one.

I am deeply rooted in my Christian faith. I have also been a fan of Buddha for quite some time. Hanh understands spirituality that surpasses religion and shares that understanding in a very friendly, accessible style.

This book was very informative and a joy to read. The sameness between Christianity and Buddhism are made very clear. I definitely would recommend and anyone interested in religion read this book

I have been a life long Christian--wth definite up's and Down's in my faith. Along the way, I have found one of our western society's greatest issues is lack of awareness, inability to sit quietly, running too fast. I believe there is definitely something to learn from this book. I have a hard time reconciling various religions because it does seem there are compelling parts to many. And I do wonder if, as the author said, a mixed fruit salad of religions is OK. But I think we can't underestimate God and the number of ways God appears to us and the avenues he uses! Sometimes I wish the author used more examples and real world connections, but I still liked the book and definitely the message.

Absolutely wonderful book! For those who are open enough to objectively look at the similarity of the teachings of Jesus and the Buddha this is a clearly written masterpiece. I highly recommend it.

This book is a treasure trove for anyone interested in SC. The writing style throughout is accessible and enthusiastic, and the quality of information is truly impressive. Of course, any book like this one suffers from the rapid pace of software development, so some information is already outdated. However, as far as I can tell all the examples are useful as-is (barring system-specific dependencies). The book is not organized as a progressive series of tutorials, so the newcomer may seem a bit bewildered by the array of SC's possibilities and how best to go about learning them. I suggest the complete beginner read Cottle chapter to get started, then just jump into the other chapters as they become of interest.I've used SC with Linux on & off over the past years. The SC Book has been a great inspiration for me to get back into this wonderful language - I'm primarily a Csound-based composer, but I'm always on the look-out for interesting developments in similar languages and systems. Btw, the only reason I didn't give it five stars is the absence of an accompanying disc, but in truth it isn't necessary, the book will guide you to all necessary resources. So okay, I'm really giving it four and a half stars. :)

I have been using Supercollider since the first release in 1996. Since then it has become 'open source' and has (as it's creator James McCartney says in the introduction) taken on a life of it's own. Multitudes of creative minds in the field of computer music have added to the code and have made it such a rich and wonderful programming environment to work in. I am primarily a composer of acoustic chamber works, but what I have always liked about Supercollider is it efficiency. It has always seemed less cumbersome to me than CSound, and right out of the gate you are creating complex and interesting sounds with a minimal amount of code. In the spirit of Supercollider itself, the book is not written by one person but is authored by the top Supercollider gurus and practitioners from around the world. It starts with a straightforward tutorial by David Cottle and progresses quickly to more complex and specific subjects like granular synthesis and machine listening. But you will find, even from the preliminary code, that you are creating amazing, timbrally rich sounds. This book is a great achievement!!! We have waited a long time for this! Anyone who is interested in Supercollider and computer music needs this book!!

This is the bible. It goes over supercollider inside and out. The beginning is quite rocky as they seem to start giving you examples which aren't well explained. Be prepared for some hair pulling. Regardless, this book along with some supplemental tutorials in the internet will get you going.

There are a lot of great things to say about this book. It is extremely well written by a large number of luminaries in the SuperCollider field, it contains an enormous store of knowledge on the subject, and it deals with rather important concepts of general programming and sound design that are necessary for any sound programmer to understand, to name a few good things. That being said, if you are a beginner to programming and/or sound and sound design, do NOT go to this book first. I had no programming experience when I first started making my way through this tome, and I believe that the only way I got through it was through previous knowledge of music, sound, and an unbreakable determination to actually learn how to program in SuperCollider. Problems that will arise for a beginner:1) The fact that it is written by so many different authors is a problem in itself. On one hand, you get a well-rounded, complete view of a myriad of different concepts and practices. On the other, there is very little connectivity between chapters, and as such it can be quite distressing to finish one chapter and then begin another feeling like everything you learned in the previous chapter doesn't apply anymore.2) This book is very poor in terms of giving beginner examples. The first chapter starts you off well, but once you get past that, most every other chapter just dives right into very difficult and precise examples after giving very general conceptual explanations. Instead of saying, "You just learned how to add 1+1, so here's how you add 1+1+2", it often feels like "Now that you know how to add 1 and 1, here's how you do differential equations and lambda calculus". Oftentimes chapters will leave you feeling like you have a better understanding of what SuperCollider is capable of but with no means to actually apply any of it. Examples are generally very complex and poorly explained in terms of actually learning the language. There is NO hand holding, and if you don't know much about programming, it will take you a LONG time to understand what they're talking about and how to use their examples in a progressive, practical manner. The Help files on the IDE are almost more useful for examples than this book.3) There is no "order" to how you learn programming concepts in this book. Learning standard programming from other sources was immensely enlightening because most of the time they teach you concepts in logically reasonable steps (i.e. statements to variables to conditionals to functions and objects to classes to arrays etc...) whereas in this book, it's all extremely scattered. I had NO idea how to use conditionals, loops, or classes in SuperCollider until I learned how to do it in a standard programming language and by that time I had already gotten very far into the SuperCollider Book.My advice is to use a different book or to learn another, more standard language while you learn SuperCollider. It WILL help immensely and when you finally get this book (and you should definitely get it if you're serious about learning SuperCollider), you'll be much better off.
