The book looks good, but something that really annoys me is to find errors in the solutions. Exercise 11 is supposed to come from the game of Steinitz vs Meitner, Vienna, 1882. But the solution does not correspond to this game, but to the game of Mackenzie vs Steinitz, Vienna, 1882. And using the name index to find the solution was not useful.

I initially posted this review on the Chessable version of "The Woodpecker Method" 3 months ago. The rapid progress and online peaks continued after I posted my review, so there was likely some delayed integration."The Woodpecker Method" seems to have rapidly improved my chess in measurable ways. I decided to undertake an experiment regarding this book. I wanted to study it 3 hours per day (priority of review, then learning new lines) until I could solve the entire book (key moves) with 97+% accuracy within 3 hours (according to Chessable's timer). With such an intense method and Chessable's efficient platform, this only took me approximately 1 week to complete. First, I gathered data. I wanted to see where my skill for speed chess and speed tactics were at, as this book can supposedly help improve your tactical intuition. After 4 hours of chess.com blitz, my rating stabilized at approximately 2250 with a peak of 2279. I also did 4 hours of blitz tactics on chesstempo, finishing off with an approximate 2100 rating where my rating (when focused and optimized) tended to stay in the 2115 to 2120 range (give or take 10 points). During "The Woodpecker Method" 3 hr per day training, I did 4 chess.com blitz games per day on most days, more on some. I beat a GM within days of starting serious study of "The Woodpecker Method", then started to peak on chess.com blitz almost every day. Fast forward to approximately 1 week later, after I succeeded in solving the book within 3 hrs (98% accuracy!), I gathered new data on chess.com blitz and chesstempo blitz tactics. My blitz peak went from 2279 to 2335! My chesstempo blitz peaked (old peak: about 2150), I got 2163, and I'm currently sitting at 2150, which was higher than the highest rating I was at during the pre-woodpecker data collection by approximately 20-30 points.One of my friends who knows a lot about chess improvement suspects that this is only part of the improvement that will happen as the result of this study, perhaps more will kick in within a couple months.Edit: later on the same day I wrote this review, my chesstempo blitz tactics peaked by another 15 points or so (approx. 2180). It seems that some of the results from woodpecker are immediate, some are delayed.Conclusion: intensive study of "The Woodpecker Method" brought me rapid and noticeable results. Highly recommended, 5/5 stars.

This is the full set of the Pope’s teachings, including some sections he didn’t deliver in his Wednesday audiences, with extensive cross-references to his notes, a book he wrote before becoming pope, and prior published editions. The headings make it easier to know where we are in the pope’s plan of argument. Bless his heart, he got to a level where either no editor was willing to correct him or maybe he misunderstood the papal infallibility clause and thought he didn’t need an editor, but his irregular use of quotation marks and highlighting to emphasize some ideas is lovingly reflected in the current edition.

An amazing book and would recommend to anyone! This needs to be taught to our teenagers/young adults. Very much makes the teachings about sex and relationships tangible for people. This provides the "why" and really allows a person to understand that there is true beauty in chastity (read: not simply abstinence)! If we could form better teaching material that follows TOB than it would be perfect for those in high school/going through confirmation. Kids nowadays need to know the "why" and not the simply "shut up and color" teachings.

Pope JPII's masterwork has been described as a time bomb ticking away in the heart of western civilization, and not likely to go off at least until the middle of the twenty-first century. It is, in fact, quite probably the most important book to be written in the past four hundred years. It directly challenges the path on which Descartes set the thinking of western civilization when he began the work (carried on by others) of separating the person into the exterior, the less important body as opposed to the truly important interior where the real me resides. The result has been a Manichaeism quite unlike anything seen since the end of the ancient world, and proving to be just as destructive of modern culture as was that antique (in both senses) system and its denigration of the physical. At times Pope JPII's masterwork casts brilliant light on everything from scriptural exegesis to philosophy to physical love, but it is at very heavy going. For that reason, to the reader unfamiliar with some of these themes I recommend Christopher West's book on the theology of the body for beginners.

This is a compilation of a series of lectures given by Pope John Paul II on the true meaning of sexuality and spousal union. It is a rather lengthy book, with lots of repetition because they are his lectures. At the beginning of each lecture, expect that he will "recap" what he discussed the previous time. It is good to read his actual words, but it requires patience to filter through the "new" material he presents because after a while you realize he is saying the same thing in different words; but, this may be required to get his message through to some readers/listeners. Each of us learns and grasps concepts differently, so his presentation of the material is geared toward universality in teaching the meaning of true spousal union as mutual self-gifting as given to us by God in the beginning before the fall in Eden. Using Scripture, JPII explains God's divine plan for human sexuality and its purpose; and he explains how objectification and selfishness in sexuality has led to a multitude of problems for society. He sees the sacramental aspect of marriage between man and woman through the eyes of Scripture. It is worth the time to read, but be patient with his repetitions, realizing that this was originally a lecture series. This book includes the "transcripts" of those lectures. Every Christian person--Catholic or not--should read his book to understand how sacred human sexuality is and how deviance destroys relationships.

I believe this is the most important teaching of our time, next to JPII's earlier work "Love and Responsibility". And there are good points to note about this edition, such as the wide margins (nice for jotting down notes), and the thick pages (so ink does not bleed through the paper).However, I did run into an issue with the binding. Just half way through reading it (after 2 months ownership), the binding cracked in multiple locations and pages fell out. None of my other books have this problem, including books I've owned for years from other publishers, but perhaps my copy was just defective. If publishers are reading this, an offering of hard cover would be nice. A work of such great importance for our time deserves a high quality binding. Thank you!

I have to say, this is an amazingly powerful book. I suffer from OCD myself, and it seems that all these self-help books just don't get it. This isn't in any way a self-help book, but for those needing to know someone out there gets it, he does. It's so isolating and depressing to have to deal with, and the fear is unbearable. Howie talks about his battle, and I have to admit, it really hit home. I realized someone gets it., someone gets my struggle and my fears. I wish we could've delved a bit deeper into that side, but honestly, I'm not surprised it didn't. He talks about his debilitating ADHD, which I'm sure was part of why the book didn't delve deeper. I'm sure it was hard enough talking about his struggles and life, but that being said, it's still a fantastic read. I laughed pretty hard at parts (won't spoil those for those who've not read it yet,) but I will say I may have gotten a few looks reading it in the breakroom at work. Don't hesitate to read this. You really won't regret it.

I have loved Howie's comedy for years. I have viewed many of his standup and cried i was laughing so hard.In this book, you get to see a side of him that is deeply private and really powerful. The sandflies freaked me the hell out and I am not a "germaphobe."This book made me tear up for another reason though. Was it funny? Very much so. But that is not it at all. It takes a powerfully brave man to lay it all out on the table like this. It reminds me of another hero of mine, Robin Williams, what a sad trick of fate that the people who make us laugh so very hard are so very troubled when they are off the stage. This is the reason I cry now.Howie, we love you. Thank you for making us laugh and here's the deal: I won't touch you!

I was reading the book and just happened to get to the part about your afib...the night before my husband's cardiac ablation was scheduled. This has been a long journey for us - 18 months of medications, 3 cardioversions...and finally, FINALLY, we were going to check into the hospital for the ablation at 6 the next morning, which meant a 4am wakeup. Here I am, reading in bed at midnight, to take my mind off the possible things that could go wrong. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I did a little of both and went to sleep.

This was such a fun read. At times poignant as Howie Mandell walks you through his life and his perspective on his various issues. I felt sad for him at times and many others I was truly laughing out loud - which he would have loved since often this was sitting alone in the middle of a restaurant. Awkward is his stock in trade and certainly felt that at times.This is not a joke book, but it is very funny. This is not a how to handle OCD, ADHD, etc book - but he does tackle these from his point of view.If you enjoy watching Howie, you will enjoy this read. It is as if he were sitting on a talk show couch and someone is transcribing his words. Feels like a conversation that he has invited us to join.

I knew who Howie Mandela was, but I didn't. This revealing autobiography puts a New light on just how eccentric his life really is. The chapter about his practical jokes was embarrassing to read and I wasn't even there. He has such a tilted view on life that I am amazed he is so successful at it. He is obviously amazed that he actually wrote a book and I am amazed that it had been proofread. Good story.

I bought this used book after watching a taping of "America's Got Talent" where Mandel is one of the judges. Parts of the book are laugh-out-loud funny; others are sad. It's great that Mandel is being upfront about obsessive-compulsive disorder and other disorders. All the more interesting because he grew up during a time of huge stigmas about mental illness and treatment. I am also happy that his parents, who could have criticized and discouraged their son when he was a kid, teen and young adult, instead encouraged him and were enthusiastic about his efforts.

Howie is interesting and funny. He is honest about his OCD and he also shares his rise to fame. It is a good book. He draws you in to his horror of repeated hand washing and checking of things. He is very real, a real person in how he learned to live with it. I recommend it to everyone who wants to understand OCD. If you don't know what OCD is it is obsessive compulsive disorder.Judye B.

First off, I'm not real big on nonfiction. I don't hate it but it's just not my normal "cup of tea". This was drawn for my bookclub though, so I read it.And it was funny. Sometimes a little too much info (the incident with his daughter and the drainage ditch, his father's death), but entertaining none-the-less. But if you are thinking you are going to get a lot of details about OCD, you will be disappointed. He talks about it, but it really does deal mostly with his rise to fame, in spite of having OCD.I feel sorry for his wife, she's either going for sainthood or just loves torture, you decide. And friendships...? I don't think he ever does anything maliciously, he just can't seem to grasp that sometimes a joke to one, hurts another, so I feel for all of those close to him.It was touching to read about his relationship with his parents, especially his Dad. How they always showed nothing but love and support regardless of what he did, and have always been proud of him, even when he was laying on floors and drawing on himself to "measure" carpet.An entertaining read, but not a lot of depth and not a lot of advice of how to cope with OCD, for those interested in that aspect of him and his career. And even though I didn't really want to read it, would have never chosen it on my own, I did enjoy it. But read it for the laughs, not the OCD.
