Nice intro into avalanche safety. Easy to read, although the since behind snow pack is a little monotonous sometimes. Covers the "A to Z" of avalanche safety and covers most of the bases in a general manner.I would recommend this book if you're just getting into back-country activities, as well as a nice refresher.

I have taken many avalanche courses and have taught snow snow science and safety workshops. In this very clear and entertaining book Allen and Mike have summarized nearly everything I got from a 4-day Level II Avy course. The illustrations are awesome - they really show the concepts, and their humor helps you remember what you learned.I assign this book to every winter course I teach! My unsolicited advice for winter backcountry safety: buy and read this book, then take a good avalanche course. After that get out and practice what you learn with your adventure partners.

Great simple straightforward read. Visual aids and illustrations are super helpful. Great intro course book. Valuable information for anyone venturing into the backcountry.

As always these series of books have great info and drawings to go along with them. A wealth of info to add to your outdoor library

Super easy to read and probably saved my life while climbing in the whites. A must-read for those who can't work in a chance at formal education. With this book and some pit digging practice, I feel much more confident although it's definitely no substitute for experience and a formal class.

Claudia Osborn was a physician when she was hit by a car while riding her bike one night. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury.This book describes her journey afterwards, her treatment, her deficits, her futile hopes for the future and the grief when she realized she couldn't achieve them. She talks about her unwavering resolve to make herself able to function, by writing herself notes, recording directions on her tape recorder and filling notebooks with lists of how to go about her day.This book really made me understand how a tbi can affect a person in so many ways we cannot begin to see. It was fascinating and fun, thorough and intelligent, and I feel I and many others will benefit from reading this book, specifically for the understanding that it provides and the patience that it teaches. These lessons are good for us non-brain-injured people, too - especially the ones on acceptance and patience.

The last chapter "Head Injury Primer" is worth buying the book for. It lists and explains various symptoms. I have multiple traumatic brain injuries and there are few Doctors and Health Resource Workers who understand TBI. I buy these books and hand them out. Dr Claudia Osborn ... a Doctor at the time of her brain injuries ... tells the story of how she was able to learn about her brain injuries; what she could do to help herself; understand her limitations and rejoice in her strides. Personally, this book has been a saving grace for me. I can't articulate what is happening with my brain injuries, so I give them a book to read. Unfortunately, few will read a book .......... but, I am persistent in talking about this Invisible Disability ........... I teach them whether they like it or not. There is also a video that you can buy of a lecture that Dr Claudia Osborn did. For those who need to see to comprehend and retain, the video is good.

The fact that Dr. Osborn was able to write a memoir of her own head injury and rehabilitation is in itself inspiring, but the true gift to the reader is her ability to blend clinical objectivity that informs and educates with the emotional rollercoaster of her tragedy and rehabilitation. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the TBI community (patients, families, friends, caregivers) as she pulls few punches in chronicling her struggles and, despite her sobering new reality, offers an example of hope at a meaningful and rewarding life for the patient willing to let go of his or her old self and embrace a new one.

This story tells the truth about brain injury. As a mentor for TBI and Stroke survivors, I am so glan that Dr. Osborn leaves the reader with what really happens to The brain injured. The truth is that every survivor is different but no one recovers completely. They become a different person then they were and Dr. Osborn's story is told beautifully. Unlike the more famous book, " My Stroke of Insight," Dr. Osborn tells the truth. In "My Stroke of Insight" the author leaves the impression that if you work hard you can recover. All survivors can recover to a degree but not many recover without some disability. Claudia Osborn has hit a home run with "Over My Head."

Dr. Osborn's experience has so much in common with mine, and watching her fellow survivors gave me more insights into my own condition. Usually I don't like knowing that there are others like me, but in this particular situation it's comforting to know that certain disturbing things are actually somewhat typical. Somehow she twisted this problem until it looks like something that can be dealt with--which is really more effective than the despair that is so easy to feel when thinking about my injury.

Not your usual wry-laughter or it-all-comes-out-fine-after-serious-injury book. There are several first-person books, some written by neurology clinicians, on experiencing their own serious brain injury and recovery. However, if you're looking for something that really communicates the experience of cognitive scrambling after head injury as well as how it all looks to the family/loved ones, yet gives you some hope for the new-normal future, this is it. The author was a clinical professor of medicine before her TBI and retains a fair bit of a clinician's perspective on herself (doubtless with some editorial help) , even while acknowledging and demonstrating the losses she has sustained and lives with. Fascinating book, and an unexpectedly good read.

Janis was born in Australia to Scientology "royalty," the third child of Peter Gillham, the founder of Natural Vitality Natural Calm and Calmag, and Yvonne Gillham-Jentzsch, the founder of the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre. Her stepfather is Heber Jentzsch, known for many years as the President of the Church of Scientology International, and its primary spokesman. Aboard the Scientology ship Apollo, she worked for eight years as one of the personal messengers of Scientology's controversial founder, L. Ron Hubbard. She had a front-row seat as Hubbard expanded his new religion into a worldwide empire. I was a nerd 1975-2003 in the L. Ron Hubbard staff writings category.So Janis' much anticipated book (s), intertwined with Hubbard's writings of the same period she writes about in her two books, just helped rewrite and revise that history in my mind.Hubbard turns out to be a big cry baby. Janis just lays down irrefutable first hand, day by day, stories of his life, when she was one of his Commodore's Messengers.The only "OT" (supernatural event) she witnessed was one time he quietly did a sort of mind telekinetic concentration to project (supposedly) his will over a long distance, to ameliorate some ongoing tragedy occuring elsewhere on earth.Hubbard never soul-fly, never in the day to day events of her years at Hubbard's beck and call, waiting in the hall outside his office, to carry messages for him, never did she witness by him or anyone else, any obviously supernatural event. Coincidences here and there, of course, but no soul-flying, no mind over matter, no ashtrays flying around for Hubbard to tap his KOOL cigarette ashes into, no, the Commodore's Messengers had to carry the ashtrays for Hubbard to tap his ashes into. He was unable to move a single ashtray with his mind. (This is somewhat of an ongoing inside joke, when it has been long revealed the Commodorie's Messengers had to carry Hubbard's ashtrays, since the beginner Scientologists on one of their training levels do a training drill called "TR-8" which they shout at ashtrays and demand the ashtrays rise into the air, but in reality, no one of course ever makes the ashtrays physically rise my their mind power).The biggest lesson of Janis' books to me, a long term hopeful dupe of the Scientology movement, was that Hubbard displayed no supernatural powers, never, not once.The book was truly sobering and history revisionism in a positive way.Thankyou eternally Janis Grady Gillham.

I just finished reading Janis’s second book and I can’t praise it enough.She takes you on her journey of mental and physical survival of the world she experienced when she personally worked for years directly with L. Ron Hubbard. I was there on the Apollo during some of these years and I was shocked and blown away as to how much I didn’t know about and I knew a lot. She sheds new insight as to who he really was. It is a real life horror story of a child surviving while working next to one of the world most notorious narcissistic paranoid demagogues.

This book is a rare look into Scientology in the 70s from a unique perspective. The detail of life on the "flagship" Apollo as L. Ron Hubbard travels from port to port and eventually back on to American soil. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Scientology.

This book doesn’t disappoint. I loved the first book and book II was just as great. Highly recommend.

The story of life aboard the ship with LRH during the formative years of Scientology. A must read for any Scientologists.

I chose this rating because of the interesting subject matter;the author's ability to weave together such a huge range of persons, times, and places; and the shear difficulty of the task.These are also the things I liked about the book. Mostly I liked the more familiar writing style that felt like sitting in the room with the author. What I didn't like was the difficulty in following the "family histories" and geneologies .I do have the authors two books Following Philo I and II, but didn't finish. As the author suggests, they are difficult to follow. Having read this third book in the subject, I feel like I can finish the other two.The previous books and this more user friendly version present some incredible ideas that explores possible solutions to many mysteries inherent in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. For people interested in the subject matter, th is a great book.
