This is a gorgeous and complete treatment of our solar system supported by very recent spacecraft data (Galileo, Pathfinder) in addition to the seminal Voyager flybys and Viking landings. The next edition will likely include Mars Global Surveyor data as well as findings from the Saturnian Cassini mission in 2004. The prose is much more readable than that of most college textbooks, yet coverage of the subject matter is thorough on an amateur level. The artwork and choice of photographs is exquisite and complements the text perfectly, in full color.When I ordered this book I was hoping for a tour of the solar system in the context of the question: "What would it be like to be there?" Well, this book only partially fits that bill but to be fair, it's not designed to! It's more a technical summary of theories scientists are confident in the verity of or have evidence to support. The New Solar System is the best example I've seen of this specific type of text. And there are many others out there, most of which are either too basic or too detailed for the serious amateur astronomer.I'm still looking for the "overactive imagination" version of this book though! :)

Through its many iterations the editors have managed to tie substantiated facts with brand new discoveries quite seemlessly. The writing avoids the mistake of taking you on a "ride" through the solar system and instead focuses on facts and inferences. It bugs me when writers throw too much opinion your way trying to paint the night sky in your head. Instead, you get to do all that painting yourself.The illustrations and tables are also very good. The tie together the body of text pretty well. I'm not any kind of engineer or photographer, so when the included visual aids bring the words to life like this, it makes the reading time valuable.What I really wanted was an all-encompasing text reference of our home planetary family. What I got was all that and a little more. It's well worth the dollars of initial investment. If we want a greater understanding of who we are and where we come from, careful study of our observable neighborhood qualifies as a good investment of time.

It's a great all-around book for learning the basics of our solar system. My daughter loves looking through it with me. It has just enough detail to be of value to someone seriously learning about astronomy, as well as easy enough to skim for someone just learning. Not an advanced cosmology text, more of a general reference.

As a layperson reading this book, I find it very easy to understand what is being said, and I feel that I am learning a great deal from it. The writing is interesting enough to hold my attention and keep me from drifting off, which is a problem I have with many other science texts. Overall, I am finding reading this book an enjoyable experience.

Even though its over a decade old it's still a great reference. I'm using it in a master's class and I can see why the professor chose it: it's both approachable and authoritative.

This book is packed full of exciting pictures and is an in depth look at the solar system based on that latest discoveries in space exploration. It is an exciting read for anyone who is into astronomy. Some parts of the book are filled with scientific detail that can be difficult to read, but can be understood if you are willing to get through them.

This is a Non-fiction book. Interesting to read. It would be a bit advanced for most people to understand. Mostly academically aimed. A lot of it is supposition based on scientific formula. I recommend reading it once. A bit over the top.

Our family has enjoyed some of the what if scenarios and laughed about them. Our children are all teenagers, and they are able to understand the science as explained in the book. Their favorites are the fastest manmade object and the nuclear reactor swimming pool. The teenagers have asked us to read these aloud on long car trips.

If you enjoy Randall Munroe's webcomic, XKCD.com , you will love this fun compilation from his blog- What if? Readers present him with absurd questions such as: What would happen if everyone on earth was in the same place and they all jumped simultaneously? Or Could you make a periodic table with actual pieces of each element? Or What would happen if you went swimming in the containment pool of a nuclear reactor? Munroe applies his extensive knowledge to each question- with unexpected and entertaining results. I bought this book after thoroughly enjoying another of his books- Thing Explainer. I purchased both because I have enjoyed XKCD for years and wanted to support his efforts. I'm glad I did, because I will enjoy sharing both with family and friends!

I love the blog and was really looking forward to this book, but buying the kindle edition was a mistake. There are a lot of missing images, and many of them are also strangely enlarged or shrunk. I'll probably buy the hardcover edition later, anyone looking to buy this stay away from the kindle.

Best bathroom book ever... and I mean that in the very best possible way you can imagine.If you want your party guests to quickly return to intelligent conversations after visiting the loo, while still providing them with appropriate reading material, you cannot possibly do better than this.Short chapters, great illustrations, fascinating topics...I don't even want to think about how many hours of research went into this book, but it is absolutely amazing and I have given away multiple copies to friends over the years. Very, very highly recommended if you have even a passing interest in science and geekiness...Thank you Randall Munroe!

I love sharing the things I learn from this book with my roommates. Sadly, some of them don't understand why on earth I'd want to read what they deem a physics textbook that tells you nothing useful. I rebuttal by explaining that it's not too different from Mythbusters. Sometimes the absurd questions have definite answers, like what would happen to the batter if a pitcher pitched a ball at nearly the speed of light. Some simply don't have fun answers, but he takes them a step further to make them fun! Similar to Mythbusters, where the see what would have to happen to get the desired result. What happens if everyone on earth shined a laser pointer at the moon? Nothing noticeable. What about if everyone on the earth shined a megawatt laser at the moon? something much more interesting. This book is all kinds of fun and a great coffee-table book. I can highly reccomend it.

This was much more detailed and advanced than I thought it would be. It popped up when I was searching for books for my son, books that had to do with subjects like anatomy and maps and other "intelligent" topics (vs. picture books and character stories). It's way too advanced for my son, but my husband will love it and perhaps can simplify the ideas for my son. The book itself is very interesting, but might be a bit much for those not too mathematically inclined.

Some of the most interesting and entertaining learning I've ever done. Randal Munroe illustrates the beauty of science in this book by showing how it all still applies even in ridiculous situation leading to hilarious results. I love this book and had the e-version for a while but really just wanted to be able to put it on my shelf and thumb through it while feeling the pages.

I purchased this as a gift but managed to read almost the entire book without breaking the binding before I gave it away. I witnessed a 17-year old boy shout with laughter and delight as he turned the pages for the first time. I laughed out loud while reading it, myself. "This is AWESOME!" he crowed, and immediately began reading excerpts to me. Definitely a hit! Most of my gifts tend to be literary. I believe books are so valuable; they can be read and shared over and over again throughout a lifetime. This book, in particular, could be given to so many diverse individuals! I can't think of a single acquaintance of mine who would not get a kick out of it. It would also be great to keep on the bedside table in the guest room for restless visitors. Enjoy!

So, I didn't realize this was an mpreg series before I bought this book. I'm usually not I to that genre. That being said, I almost gave this book five stars. It is really fantastic. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read more about them.I especially love that the main characters very quickly accept the fact they are fated mates. They don't spend half the book questioning their connection to each other which seems to happen in most fated mate books I've read.The reason this gets four stars instead of five is that book really needs some serious editing. There are a lot of spelling mistakes, typos, and words missing from sentences. It would have really frustrated me if the story wasn't so good. Also, Jackson states that he pretty much raised all his younger siblings, yet later on he had no clue what a onesie is or all the things he will need for his child. That was hard to believe.Even so, I really enjoyed this story. I could barely make myself put it down to go to work, and when I got home I read until I fell asleep with it in my hands. I can't wait to read what happens next.

Dire Warning is the first book in a new series by a new Author Mary Rundle. I always hesitate when picking up a author's first book. This one is well written the story takes the familiar M/M pregnancy and adds a new twist.The book has a few too many coincidences, but in a world of fated mates, and shifters I'll let it go. The characters develop in a natural fashion with a good deal of angst and a back story involving, nasty family members, and a plot to kill off one of the main characters.I look forward to the next book.

Steel and Jackson are fated mates but they’re both alphas with 2 separate problems. Steel is one of the last four Dire Wolves alive and Jackson and his brothers are hiding from his uncle’s pack who massacred Jackson’s family and pack. Loved the author’s new take on shapeshifters!I started with the third book in this series and had to buy the first two because of the twist in the storyline as well as the great way the characters come alive! You’ll love this series!

Overall, enjoyable read, but I got bro’d out by the end of the book. The use of “bro” was distracting to an otherwise entertaining story. Do brothers really refer to each other as bros all the time? Yikes- just turned me off after a while. I’m going to give the next book a shot to see if its use is a lot more tempered. I hope so.

I was all prepared to give this a five star rating, but I took one off because nothing was actually resolved in this book. It ended very abruptly and would definitely be unsatisfying if I didn't already have book two in the series.But I do love this story so far and am very excited to read more about what the Fates have in store for the Blackwood Pack.

NOT disappointed at all! I am captivated by your Books! There is not one part of your books you have written where I feel disconnected at all. I feel as though I am in the thick of it with the characters it's amazing and I appreciate you writing this piece of art! I am anticipating the next book!

Mary did an exceptional job drawing me in with her characters. I felt connected and immediately worried about them the way I would my friends. The love story was sweet, the families relatable, and the premise believable. I cannot wait to see where this goes although I have a few ideas from the hints that were dropped. Bring on the next book. A definite one-click!

I was recommended to read this book and I'm glad I did...it was kind of hard for me to follow at 1st with the PO V changing in rapid fire but once I got into it I truly enjoyed the read... Characters are very interesting and I like the continuing plot.... Off to book 2
